Our small town has a wonderful library that thanks to a grant from local book lovers, the Johnsons, hosts events featuring wonderful authors. Last night it was mystery writer Peter Johnson’s turn, talking with area author Connie Johnson Hambley about his process and what inspires him. I’m excited to dig into his book and also to read the third in the series of Connie’s recently reissued trilogy.

I’ve had some sort of nasty flu like thing all weekend. Since I was laid up I took the down time to read a memoir by poet Carla Panciera. The book is a love letter to growing up in a farm family with a father who had farmed cattle all his life and a mother who came into that way of life unknowing what she was in for but embracing it. Recently I’d read the blockbuster novel Yesteryear and was underwhelmed. I get its popularity. It’s fiction fitted to this specific moment in time. But if you want to read what it might feel like to live a so called “tradwife” life for real, regardless of when in time, read Barnflower! by @joanwilking

My book had a publisher I admired. All was well until it came to the cover. If you know me, you know I spent my money-making years as a graphic designer and design firm owner. I designed promotional materials for typeface and paper manufacturers, interior design products, high end real estate projects and (no surprise) literary journals and book covers among a long list of other things. So I was initially excited to see the cover my publisher would propose for my book. When it was finally revealed my disappointment was immediate. Not only was the imagery completely unrelated to the genre of the book, it mimicked several other books in the publisher’s catalog, and the base image was a manipulation of a clearly attributed Adobe stock photo, which carries the warning “Generated with AI. Editorial use must not be misleading or deceptive.” My objections to it were disregarded and in the end my contract was cancelled and I took back the publishing and distribution rights to the book.

I take no pleasure in revealing this or being left with the task of publishing the book myself. I was looking forward to becoming one of that publishing house’s authors alongside other authors I know whose work I admire. Instead my book will be published under my own imprint, Ox Pasture Hill Press, which I dusted off last year to get my award winning novella, Mycology, back into print in anticipation of the new book’s publication.

Sometimes life takes a turn into unexpected places. At my age I never expected to publish another book. That a publisher took it was an unexpected delight. That the deal fell apart due to such unexpected circumstances has been crushing. Fortunately I have the capability to publish the book myself. Next Tuesday the new cover will be revealed. I hope you’ll all follow along and recommend others follow me as I drag my book kicking and screaming into the world. Preorders will open soon. The official publication date is still on track for November 10th. I hope you’ll agree it will be worthy of a read and will help me spread the word.
