Channeling my inner Briseis 💐🌹🌸🏵🌻🌷

This cover is so beautiful and I'll never get over it!

I loved the mentions of Briseis' hair- her twist-outs and puffs, etc. I know I've said it before, but it's really special and inner child-healing to be able to read so many fantasy and sci-fi books now where I can actually relate to even small things like that.

And of course, loved the premise. Bri has special powers that allows her to manipulate plants. She is adopted and has no idea where her powers come from, but when her aunt dies and leaves her house as an inheritance to Bri, she just may find out. I loved the Secret Garden vibes and Greek mythology woven into this story.

If you're looking for a quick yet mysterious book, give this one a try!

✨️ Writing/Life Update:

📖 This year, I plan on focusing, focusing, focusing on my writing. I'm already off to a great start! But with that in mind, I know that I will be reading a lot less than I normally do, which makes me kind of sad. I work from 9:30-6, I work out consistently, take a break to allow myself to watch at least 1 episode of my choosing from a current show (because self-care and less burnout this way), get ready for work for the next day, clean, etc. This doesn't leave much time before bed to read AND write. I've thought about asking for a shift change at work but tbh I am NOT a morning person and idk how productive I'd be on an earlier shift 😭

📖 I'm in the midst of editing my 1st draft. I've actually never been in this stage of writing before. Though I've done a lot of peer-edits, editing my own work is an entirely new beast and I find myself trying to work through a maze of my own creation. It's daunting. But I'm taking it one step at a time. First I did a read-through and took notes and now I'm working through developmental edits! I have a lot of work to do before I would feel comfortable sending it out to peers for their thoughts and edits, but would anyone be interested in taking a look when I'm ready?

💟 I've forgiven myself for "slacking" in 2022. I put so much pressure on myself, but I did do more than I give myself credit for!

Anyways, if you've made it through all these notes then thank you for your support! 🥰

Let's get writing and reading but remember to keep it fun, don't stress, remember your passion and if it starts to feel too much like work then take a break!

In November 2020, a character named Rose popped into my head and waved to me, like an old friend that had always been there. She hasn’t left me for nearly 2 years now as I wrote her story down. I’ve had my moments- weeks of not writing, thoughts of self-doubt, tears of frustration, moments where I just wanted to give up and let myself think that maybe I should “stop wasting my time”. But Rose never left me. So again and again, I would try again.

This first draft is a glorious mess that is in dire need of some love and attention. There is so much to take away, so much to add, so much to edit. But for now, I am taking a deep breath and being proud of myself because I did it! I wrote an entire novel!

One day, this novel WILL have a beautiful brown face on the cover, just like my favorite books that has given me so much inspiration. I’m putting it out there now- one day I will meet the lovely ladies who wrote these books and I will be in their ranks as an author by their sides.

Immortal Rose by Alexandra Bracken is definitely a contender for my #1 fave book for 2026. It's nuanced in its mystery, full cast of characters and social and political intrigue but still fun and imaginative.

My fave details of the book:

The love between Hugh and Viola grows slowly but surely. This is no insta-love yet when they do fall for each other, it is all passion and fierce love.

The perfume magic, it's consequences and different uses are so intriguing and fun! Viola is the perfect character to hold such a responsibility. Life has not dealt her an easy hand, which makes her put her defenses up (especially against Hugh) but she is still kind.

The side characters were a special surprise! Their back stories had me widening my eyes. Their personalities had me cracking up with some much needed comic relief.

I cannot wait for the sequel and yet I must!!!

Day 2 of finishing my novel before the end of the year!

I've been getting a bit frustrated with writing this chapter. Fight scenes are always so hard to write for me. The lead up, the actual fight, the ending, all of it. I'm going to read some of my fave fight scenes for sure, but it's hard not to just copy what you've read? How do you writers do research for fight scenes? How is your writing going?

As I've been steadily typing away at what I hope will be my debut novel (it will be - putting it out there!), I've been trying to develop some habits to not only help me stay consistent in writing, but to improve my life and mental health overall.

It's all good to type 2000 words per day. But if you're doing it and experiencing burn out every 5 days, chances are your writing may be suffering for it.

What are some habits you're implementing to help you become a better writer?

I've been on bookstagram since 2021. I've seen it grow, loved the community, the book reviews (which people don't seem to engage with anymore?), the beautiful pics and color-coded, feeds, the good, the bad and the ugly.

This post isn't meant to be taken as bashing on bookstagram. I'm still here, still loving it. It's more of me shouting into the void for my fellow bookstagrammers to see how we're all feeling and to remind you that it is okay to be your best bookish self. I think in certain aspects we've let social media give us a bit of brain rot, control how we think about books, how we post about books, what books we buy.

There's no way some of you read 100 or more books a year and yet I see the same 3 book series I and down my timeline? 🫠 Can we get back to actual book recommendations? Book reviews? The love of books and reading and sharing and not just hot takes bashing authors?

Also, the algorithm sucks, so remember to actually engage with your fellow peers so that you don't feel so alone and they don't either! ❤️

✨️A Weekend in my Life as an Aspiring Author✨️

I didn't write at all this weekend, but that is totally OKAY. You are not less of a writer if you don't write for a couple of days.

What This Week as a Writer with a full-time job!

Reading Immortal Rose by @alexbracken has been the highlight of the past month for me. I've been searching for a book that gives me that feeling that makes me not want to put the book down! Perfume magic, a slow-burn tension-filled romance with mystery and fun side characters?! I'm hooked.

I've been listening to @shawnacischroeder Love You More podcast and it's been so refreshing to listen to her! It truly feels like chatting with a bestie. Good, clean yet heartfelt topics (and sometimes the eps are bookish, even better).

I put this in this week's list but to be honest, I've already watched The Love Hypothesis movie and enjoyed it! I've seen such mixed reviews, but I've always been confused when people want every single thing that happened in the book to be in the movie. There's just not enough time! I enjoyed the casts protrayals of the characters, and enjoyed the funny moments!

I'm close to being done with draft 1 of my current wip, "Project Princess"! Writing this book has been such a journey. I've stopped for months, written for days straight at a time, written in large sessions and small. I'm learning so much!

I'm also enioying creating in new ways. This week, I'm really proud and excited to be on the Street Team for By Divine Rage. I haven't read my arc yet but I'm so excited to get into it and help to promote this book by a well-deserving author!
