Sharing photos of In Negotiation - our sculpture Installation at Casa Romana in Spoleto, Italy for the @mahlerlewitt residency.

It's been a few weeks since we were in Spoleto to install the sculptures but the memories and conversations we had whilst there are still very alive.

Nipping back for a quick visit in August and look forward to a talk and workshops in October.

The opening coincided with Festival dei Due Mondi and continues until the beginning of October 2026.

Thank you to @ljansch for the installation photographs (1 to 3).

In Negotiation — jocjonjosch. Opening: 27.06, 15:00, Casa Romana

A Mahler & LeWitt Studios project in partnership with the Musei Civci di Spoleto, supported by Nicole Beutler Projects, Horizon Foundation, and Rochester Square

Exhibition: 28.06–12.10
10:30–13:00/14:30–18:00 (closed Tuesday/chiuso martedi), Via di Visiale, 9

‘In Negotiation’ presents a new series
of large-scale ceramic sculptures by the
English-Swiss collective jocjonjosch in the
Casa Romana di Spoleto, one of the best
preserved Roman houses in Italy. The
sculptures resemble massive stacked shells
and are formed by abstract motifs refer-
encing body parts. Uniquely, the shells are
sculpted simultaneously by the members of
the collective. Their forms emerge through
a series of fraught exchanges in which the
artists pinch, press and knead the clay struc-
tures, testing their own intentions against
those of the group. The project has been
developed through the Mahler & LeWitt
Studios residency program. jocjonjosch
is the English-Swiss collective of Jocelyn
Marchington, Jonathan Brantschen and
Joschi Herczeg. They have been collabo-
rating since 2009. Working across per-
formance, video, sculpture, photography
and painting their work explores the ways
in which oppositions such as success and
failure, efficiency and waste, purposiveness
and pointlessness, have a tendency to slide
into one another when pushed to their
logical extremes. taken in Casa romana (Spoleto) by @jocjonjosch

Very proud to have another piece in the collection of Laure Genillard and love the way Laure and @lindaonmars hung the work.

Falling Men, 2020, was made at the height of the pandemic. Restricted to the studio, we began to experiment with our photographic painting techniques. This painting captures a number of those techniques coming together.

Over a couple of months, one of us would work on the painting before leaving it for the other to continue, going on like this back and forth.

Thank you also to @jack_carvosso_studio for his craftsmanship on the beautiful frames. taken in London, UK by @jocjonjosch

We've had a great week so far, making new work in an incredible space in the @culturemilebid in @studiosmithfield above @paulsmithsfoundation

For us to be so central, and working with the freedom of space and scale is rare.

Studios are increasingly difficult to afford these days, which makes opportunities like this even more precious. Thank you to @thisisprojekt taken in Smithfield Market by @jocjonjosch

The Second Wrestle is a photographic painting featured in our new book, What We Do.

Produced in the darkroom, we wrap photographic paper around our bodies, twisting it and pulling the lengths between us tighter until breaking point.

What We Do presents our paintings and performances in relation to photography, emphasising the importance the medium has on our thinking and making.

Photo of The Second Wrestle, 2024 by @mrmasseyman (2024). From The Wrestle series. Brightly coloured gradients on a roughly shaped rectangle of photographic paper. The paper is 3 dimensional and torn in places as a result of the process of being wrapped and twisted. taken in Lewisham, London by @jocjonjosch

We've published a new book! What We Do presents our paintings and performances as results of our relationship to photography.

Each of the editioned books is covered by an offcut of one of our photographic canvases.

Thank you to @pimcharlottecotton for setting us in this direction and getting us to think about how we'd talk about and show our work to a photographic crowd.

Unpacking work from London in Galerie zur Matze in Brig, Switzerland.

It's an impressive space that was once a salt cellar back in the 17th century and sits beneath the Stockalperschloss.

In the same place in 2016, but above ground, we performed HÜGEL GRABEN, where we dug a hole in the castle gardens, creating a large mound of earth at its lip that mirrored the excavation below.
