Talent is common.
Context awareness is rare.

The best embedded designers don’t prove themselves — they understand the system.

👇Why most augmentations fail:
• You hire for skill, but onboard into chaos
• Confidence shows up before context
• Designers change things without knowing why
• Momentum dies under “improvements” that don’t fit

👇What great embedded designers do instead:
• Ask before they assume
• Read the team before they rewrite the UI
• Learn fast and move with empathy
• Solve for progress and quality

Because potential isn’t loud — it pays attention.
The fastest learners are the ones who know they still have the most to learn.

David Lim on Why Every Design System Eventually Breaks (and Why That’s Okay)

Even the best design systems drift toward chaos over time. As David Lim, Director of Design at Culture Amp, explains, no system stays perfect — products evolve, teams grow, and user needs shift. The key is to design with flexibility in mind. Sensible defaults beat perfection every time.

Too many teams confuse speed with strategy.

And then wonder why AI doesn’t help.

Things move faster 📈 Outputs look impressive ✨ Slack’s buzzing 🔔 Figma’s full 🖥️

But no one can say what was actually solved.

If your team was unclear before AI, AI will only speed up the chaos.

The real work isn’t learning the tools! It’s building clarity around why they matter.

AI won’t replace thinking. It’ll expose where it was missing.

So, is your team chasing speed or building clarity?

Design Systems Are Never Done — Why Great Design Is Always Evolving

Design systems aren’t static — they evolve with every new trend, user need, and product update. As David Lim, Director of Design at Culture Amp, explains, design is a moving target. The needs of your app, its scope, and even what “looks good” are always changing. The key isn’t perfection — it’s building for adaptability.

lThe components aren’t the problem.
The system behind them is.

Design systems rarely fail because of how they look.

They fail when people stop trusting them.

When changes come without warning.

When no one knows who maintains what.

Here’s what actually works:

1. Predictable decisions

→ Create decision patterns, not approval chains.
Map 3–4 recurring design decisions your team makes each sprint,
and document how they’re made.

2. Visible ownership

→ Every part of the system should have a clear owner.
Put names next to components, tokens, docs wherever they live.
No ownership = no accountability.

3. Change rhythm

→ Treat system updates like product releases.
Announce them. Explain the why.
No more quiet changes that break things downstream.

4. Product alignment

→ Connect system evolution to real business priorities.
When updates serve delivery goals, teams adopt faster.

5. Cross-discipline check-ins
→ Reflect on how the system helped or slowed delivery.
Do it regularly.

Not to critique pixels, but to improve process.

Design systems are about shared confidence.

In tools.
In people.
In decisions.

Is yours building trust or just adding noise?

We’ve helped teams at NAB, Transurban, and Bupa roll out and operationalise design systems that actually scale across teams.

If you're leading a team through a design system rebuild or rollout, and want senior support without creating new headcount, send me a message.

I’ll share how we usually support that kind of work.

In this episode, David Lim, Director of Design at Culture Amp, unpacks one of design’s toughest challenges — proving ROI in B2B. He explains how to link design decisions to business outcomes, from customer experience to retention and revenue growth. Learn why understanding the “middle layer” between user value and business metrics is essential, and how acting early prevents costly design debt.

Most teams don’t slow down because they’re lazy. They slow down because they lose clarity.

At first, everything makes sense.
There’s momentum, mission, direction.

But as pressure builds, so do the compromises.
The team starts measuring speed instead of alignment.

People stay late but think shorter.
Designers ship more, but own less.
And slowly, the team becomes busy… but lost.

Here’s what it starts to look like:
• Projects get delivered, but no one knows what actually changed
• There’s a design system, but no one uses it
• There’s capacity, but no real leadership It’s not a people problem.

It’s a clarity problem.
A structure problem.
An ownership problem.

Every team hits a point where effort is no longer enough.

And someone has to ask the hard question:
Are we just working harder?
Or are we actually moving forward?

In the teams we support, the highest value isn’t in speed or skills.

It’s in people who take responsibility without waiting for permission.

If this sounds familiar, you’ve probably already taken on more than your job title suggests.

And you’ve probably felt what happens when the system doesn’t support that kind of ownership.

What is your environment rewarding right now, responsibility or passivity?

If this resonated, share it with someone leading a complex team.

Change is hard — but resistance is harder.

You can coach, mentor, and support…
but sometimes, people just won’t move.

And that’s part of leadership too —
knowing when you’ve done all you can,
and when it’s time to move forward without them.

You can’t scale what you don’t understand.
And many leaders never slow down long enough to see it.

AI doesn’t reward speed.
It rewards clarity.

Every poor output starts with a poor prompt.
And every poor prompt starts with unclear reasoning.

Prompting isn’t a trick.
It’s a mirror of how you structure a problem, a goal, or a hypothesis.

So instead of asking “How do I get better results?” start asking “How do I think in a way AI understands?”

1. Define the problem before the tool.
If you can’t explain what “good” looks like, no model can give it to you.

2. Build reasoning, not just prompts.
Write your thought process in plain language, then compress it into a prompt.

3. Iterate like a designer. Treat every prompt–output cycle as a prototype.
Test one variable at a time, observe patterns, learn, adjust.

4. Keep a “prompt journal.” Document what worked and why.
Patterns of success teach more than random wins.

5. Separate speed from depth.
Moving fast is useful only when you’re moving in the right direction.

Slow thinking scales faster over time.

AI doesn’t replace expertise.
It reveals how you think and where your reasoning collapses.

AI isn’t the problem.
It’s the lack of training around how to use it.

You can’t expect great output from tools no one’s been taught to use.
That’s the real skills gap — not the tech itself.

Start talking about the problem you’re trying to solve!

Tech isn’t the strategy — it’s the tool.
AI won’t replace us; it needs us to make it useful.
Lead with humans. Choose the right tools second.
