Old Man River & Keep On Rollin

One old project finished, one new one started.

It would seem I shall have to wait to finish off Keep On Rollin. The Cornice is wet and shows little sign of drying up.

It feels good to have cleaned up an old project so quickly (having first tried Old Man River in 2023) and a little frustrating to have fallen off so close to the top on the direct(Keep On Rollin). Patience they say is a virtue and nothing tests that quite like climbing in the U.K. It could be 2 years before I get another chance to try this route, to fall off only a couple moves from the top will sting for a little while.

It’s been a fantastic couple of months down in the dale. It’s given a real focus to my climbing and allowed me the opportunity to meet and climb with so many amazing people.

Is it the best crag in the world??

I’m not sure about that but it sure does feel like home.

Cry Of Despair

It’s rather dreamy living in the post send world after seeing off a big project. Just turning up to the crag trying what takes your fancy. There’s no pressure anymore. It’s starting to feel like the cornice doesn’t have much time left to give. Hopefully it can hold out for a couple more weeks, I’m not ready to let it go just yet.

Cry Of Despair

This one meant a lot, 12 sessions over the past month makes this by far my longest project. Having fallen off one move from the top on Sunday I wasn’t sure I’d get another good day on it before the season ended. Little did I expect to send the thing first go today.

There’s a lot I could say about the process and maybe one day I will. But for now I’ll say but this. This climb exposed every single one of my sport climbing weaknesses and really forced me to grow as a climber. Even if I’d not sent the route I’d have still taken so much away that it’d be hard to call it a failure.

It’s been quite the journey with it’s fair share of ups and downs. There’s been so many fun sessions with some great people and as with any great undertaking there’s an air of sadness that it’s over. I’m in no doubt that’ll soon fade and I’ll move onto the next big thing. But I’m unlikely to forget this climb anytime soon.

Hvar 2025

An incredible few days @hvar_climbing exploring this idyllic climbing island. Perfect beaches, shady crags with some amazing climbs and the best gelato. What more could you want from a holiday.

Over the course of the weekend we met some great people many who put so much energy into developing the almost limitless amount of unclimbed lines, it’s pretty wild to see how much potential there is for new climbs on this little island.

Lambrini Girl (Well Kind Of)

Nursing the finger that’s been niggling for a few days trying to manifest it away from injury I sit and ponder the evenings boulder.

Perched high on a shoulder of rock poking out into the valley this boulder is a pretty epic little place. The moves are delightfully basic just shuffling around on mostly jugs before a big lock on some crimps pulls you round the top.

I climbed it well moving slowly and with a static strength I didn’t use to possess. I top out, check I haven’t made my finger much worse and enjoy the evening light on the hills around.

Now here I am scanning through UKC confirming what I had feared, everyone else had started matched on the lowest hold. Had I had started a move in? Was all that effort and elation for nothing? Had I technically not done the boulder?

This presents a brilliant internal conflict and opportunity to really question why I go out and boulder. Is it for the ticks or is it to climb these cool little features in these grand places.

I’d like to say I was all in on the experience and the tick doesn’t matter as much as to me. But I’d be lying, I know I’ll think about it as I lie in bed tonight. Wishing I’d just done that extra move, but I know I’m unlikely to return there’s too many other boulders to do. So I’ll tick it anyway, this feeling will fade and in my memory I’ll be left with three things.

Bernie Musculus

I try as hard as I can to rein my elbows in but things are in motion that cannot be undone. They keep lifting until they’re pretty much 90 degrees from the wall. I’m one hold away from the end surely I can do one more move. But no I can barley move my hands the pump in my forearms has rendered them useless. I fall, elated knowing it’s game on.

This was the route I was most excited to try going into this trip, thumbing through the guidebook and reading feedback online it seemed like a pretty ideal challenge. Two perfect tufas after a technical slab what more could you want. I can safely say it surpassed my expectations in terms of quality and felt like the perfect difficulty for this length of trip. This was my 3rd session on it and the first where it felt like it could go.

Returning two days later I warm up, put the draws in and on my 3rd go it all goes fairly smoothly. I clip the chains and just like that all the winters training is justified my hardest lead to date is done.

I’ll forever remember this route but maybe more for the fight I got and the good times I had working it than the actual send. In the end it felt like I had more to give.

I came into this trip wanting a gauge of what I could hope to try this year and I left with some amazing routes ticked, my goals for the year achieved and an optimistic view of what I can try next. by @joefoster59

Leonidio 2025

Back to paradise, two weeks of fantastic climbing, the tastiest food, a dash of sunshine and time spent with good friends.

Managed my hardest route to date, failed on some others and avoided kneebars like the plague. A pretty rad trip all in all.

Deadly Digits

40 goes with one beta, 3 goes with the new and improved beta. Potentially my longest ever project unravelled by the discovery of a new foot sequence. Not the hardest thing I’ve ever climbed but a pertinent lesson in persistence and making sure all your options have been explored.

It’s been a long few months. My body is starting to disintegrate the weight of the winters training is taking its toll. I’ve never been more ready for some sunny limestone

Switzerland 🇨🇭 2024

My final reflections on amazing trip that saw me climb the two hardest boulders of my life and spend some time in the mountains with a great bunch of people.

This trip really cemented my love for projecting the unravelling of puzzle pieces and time spent getting to know a boulder and all it’s intricacies. It was also positive to affirm that all my training has paid off, a sign that I’m on the right path.

I can’t wait to see what’s next, climbing is quite the ride

18 days in paradise and the trip of a lifetime.

Brione

After investing most of my time in Magic Wood into Jack The Chipper, I thought that I’d focus my time in Brione into some mileage boulders. Climbs that would provide a challenge but not consume my holiday. Alas this failed to come to fruition and I almost immediately become hooked on trying to do Ninth Power.

Like Jack The Chipper it lies in the murky world of slash grades sitting somewhere between 7b+ and 7c. As such it appeared to provide suitable ambition for the week I had left. Thankfully it suited me a lot better than JTC been mostly big moves on big holds. Perfect for those blessed with a postive span.

The week then proceeded to fly by in a blur of golden sun and golden leaves. All in all it took me 3 sessions to see off Ninth Power. Spending the rest of my time supporting friends, soaking up some autumnal rays and enjoying the immaculate rock on some of the most amazing lower grade problems.

With a year of sport climbing lined up I’m not sure when I’ll return. If this is the last time I ever set eyes on this place the photos will be sweet and the memories even sweeter
