San Diegans are paying too much for energy, and we're fighting to change that.

Together, we introduced a City Council resolution calling on Sacramento to protect ratepayers, rein in excessive utility spending, and hold utility companies accountable.

Now, Governor Newsom has signed six bills into law that advance the priorities we called for, including preventing utilities from passing certain costs on to ratepayers, strengthening oversight, and increasing transparency.

These are important steps toward an energy system that puts San Diegans before utility profits.

As we transition to a clean energy future, we'll keep fighting to ensure every San Diegan has access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy. by @joelacava_d1

The San Diego Police Foundation supports our police department by cultivating positive community engagement and helping fund vital equipment and specialized training. Saturday night, they introduced K-9 Handler of the Year, Officer Miguel Gonzalez. Officer Gonzalez and his partner, Tarzan, serve in the K-9 Unit that safeguards public events, finds missing persons, locates evidence, de-escalates dangerous situations, prevents shootings, and preserves life.

Congratulations, Officer Gonzalez, on this well-deserved recognition. Brava to Honorary Chair Denise Friedman and the San Diego Police Foundation for supporting the SDPD and the K-9 Unit. by @joelacava_d1

Thank you to our Fire-Rescue Department and Lifeguard Services for responding to dozens of emergencies over the weekend, including downed power lines, fires, collisions, and a swiftwater rescue.

While Tropical Storm Rachel has moved past the region, risks remain along our coast and on our beaches. High surf, rip currents, and a coastal flood advisory remain in effect.

The SDFD is at an elevated water alert status to be ready to respond if needed. Residents are urged to continue taking precautions.

Stay ready. Stay safe, San Diego. by @joelacava_d1

Tropical Storm Rachel is expected to bring rainfall, increased risk of flash and urban flooding, and dangerous rip currents to San Diego over the weekend and into early next week.

- Avoid parking in flood-prone areas
- Do not drive into water of unknown depth
- Use sandbags where appropriate
- Monitor posted signage and be alert to changing conditions

Free unfilled sandbags are available to San Diego residents at select recreation centers. Find locations and more safety tips on the City’s El Niño webpage: sandiego.gov/ElNino.

Stay safe, San Diego.

It was an honor to speak at San Diego Climate Week’s Air Summit. This event, and the hundreds of events that took place over this past week, demonstrate that together we can combat our very real climate crisis.

Thank you to the Climate Advisory Board for presenting strategies in the City’s Climate Action Plan – and inviting residents’ into the conversation. It takes all of us doing our part to protect our environment and our City.

To all of the volunteers, thank you for your incredible efforts to move our region forward and make the second annual San Diego Climate Week an even greater success than the first.

The City is proactively clearing storm channels in anticipation of severe El Niño weather events. This morning, our Stormwater Department briefed me in Sorrento Valley, a flood-prone area. I thank crew members for this critical work and urge businesses and residents to prepare and stay ready.
