Here’s the secret to making great art. 👇🏾 Make more. Seriously that’s it. If you want to get better as an artist, you have to buckle down and start making more of what you love. Not for the gram. Not for the algorithm. For you. The faster you put that idea on paper, the faster you get to your next one. The faster you fail on one idea, the faster you get at making the next one better. Imagine what that looks like after 10, 50, 100 attempts. Don’t make excuses either. Those excuses only hurt yourself. You owe it to yourself to see how far and how good you can be. So yeah. Make some cool shit. Then make some more. #artistsoninstagram #art #artist #artistsupport #design #motiondesign #animation #typography #lettering #goodvibes #positivevibes #creative #behappy #workhard #playhard #bekind by @joelopez.design
Just like I said in my last reel. ✌🏾 Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat Create and Repeat #artistsoninstagram #art #artist #artistsupport #design #motiondesign #animation #typography #lettering #goodvibes #positivevibes #creative #behappy #workhard #playhard #bekind by @joelopez.design
Four words I try to live by... Hard Work, Good Work The more you work hard, the better your work gets. The better your work gets, the more you want to work hard. I hear these conversations all the time: “Why work hard? The system is rigged. Just do the bare minimum.” Etc... While I completely understand the sentiment, that doesn’t mean you should give up on YOURSELF. Work hard mean IMPROVE yourself. Good work means making work you’re HAPPY with. You really can’t have one without the other. Send this to someone who’s been putting it off, or making up excuses. Gotta go exercise your civic duties 🫡 by @joelopez.design
I could see this as an album cover/looped visualizer ✨. Just some fun late night, after effects exploration. Loops, offsets, and gradients. 💜 @buck.u.back by @joelopez.design
Curl Noise is a new effect that came out for after effects earlier this year. Similar to Turbulence Noise, it creates wispy noise for all kinds of purposes, but sometimes it takes a while to get the right settings. With Curl Noise Max, you can quickly get a bunch of useful effects right away. Randomize Save Presets Save Color Palettes Set looping animation You can even share the seed number with someone else! late night reaction-diffusion tests 🌙 this round i was pushing after effects to the brink with echo effects to get some reaction-diffusion (turing) patterns. It was kinda a bust and AE wanted to explode. So I had to look elsewhere for this idea to work. if you’re new to these, they’re turing patterns, from alan turing’s 1952 paper on how spots and stripes form in nature. cut to minecraft music because it’s the only correct 2am soundtrack. made in Claude. want a breakdown of the setup? #motiondesign #creativecoding #design #art #coding by @joelopez.design
New After Effect gradient tutorial! 1. On a new solid layer add a black to white to black linear gradient horizontally. Make sure the gradient is straight! 2. On that same layer add a mosaic effect. Mine was set to 15 on the horizontal value, and 1 on the vertical. 3. On a new solid layer add a ProGradient linear effect. Add the colors you want and make sure the ends are black. To get the movement just animate the offset option. Might take a bit of messing around. (PS ProGradient is a paid plugin, but the trial lets you use the linear, offset, and parametric options that you need for free. By @irrealix on Aescripts) 4. New Adjustment Layer: Add the Time Displacement effect. Point to towards your first solid layer with the mosaic effect. Enable Effects & Masks. Max Disp to 0.1. Time Resolution to 60. 5. New Adjustment Layer: Mesh Warp 6. New Adjustment Layer: Deep Glow 2. Im using the Lens Iris mode to get a bit of color blending between certain section but regular works fine too. And that’s it. That’s how I made this. @aescripts #motiondesign #aftereffects #animation #design #art by @joelopez.design
Stay restless and relentless. Comfort is the enemy of progress. It’s ironic that in humanity’s pursuits of peace and comfort, we must strive, fight, and throw ourselves into even more discomfort first. For those who struggled in the past to get us here, and for those to come who will carry the burden of that torch, Godspeed. - Can’t help get a little sometimes you know. Lost in thought and all that jazz. Anyways here’s another little typography poster that’s been in my head lately. I wanted to also feature a song that I found super satisfying to listen to, but that wasn’t getting all that recognition online. The sense of wonder and discovery. What do yall think? #motiondesign #aftereffects #typography #animation #design by @joelopez.design
I ruminated over this piece more than many of works I’ve done. Only because it was so personal to me. It was done for my mother’s birthday, and as a family shirt design to be printed. So I had to think about what would look best and unique once printed out. I know you usually see logo work from me, and lately just animations, so getting back to hand drawn art was satisfying to say the least. Did you know that I sketch, draw, animate all my own art? 👀 by @joelopez.design
This year my family decided to go all out and send my mom on a vacation to Mexico. In honor of her, I created an art piece for a series of family shirts to surprise her with. Each butterfly represents one of her children, my siblings, in two of our favorite colors. (yes we’re counting black also). Anyways more on that later. For now check out the process of building this illustration. Using a very specific method by @dkngstudios. Again, before anyone asks, this is how I did the grain technique. Actually drawing things, well that parts up to you. Step 1. Create a circle. Step 2. Draw the rest of the owl. More circles Decorations for the circle. Plants. More plants! Hella more plants! Butterfree, I choose you! Tada! Any questions? by @joelopez.design
So @clemensmako a similar animation and asked how we thought it was made. I didn’t want to guess in the comments so I went and rebuilt it my way. No idea if this is how the original was done. But here’s what got me there: 1. A depth map. Vertical bars from from black to white and back to black. 2. Time Displacement. Instead of animating each bar in individually, this lets me create a single gradient and animate it all in one go. 3. Gradient offset animation via ProGradient. The motion itself. Animating the offset pushes the color ramp through the composition, and because Time Displacement is remapping that movement against the depth map, the gradient appears to wrap and bend around geometry that doesn’t exist. 4. Lastly I just added a mesh warp to the final arc look. What I like about this approach is how much mileage comes out of a single grayscale image. Swap the depth map and you get a completely different result from the same comp structure. Looks impossibly complex from the outside, pretty simple once you see the wiring. Made in @adobe after effects. Plugins: ProGradient and Deep Glow 2 on @aescripts Should I do a tutorial? 🤔 #aftereffects #motiondesign #design by @joelopez.design
