About the size of a German shepherd dog, the Mexican gray wolf is the smallest wolf in North America. Once numbering in the thousands, this species was eliminated from the US landscape by 1970 due to habitat alteration and eradication efforts that were aimed at protecting livestock and game species. Meet “Mzimu”. In Swahili, Mzimu means spirit or ghost - the perfect name for a leucistic okapi. This condition, which has never been seen in an okapi in human care before, causes a lack of pigmentation in the hair and skin, giving Mzimu his rare white-gray appearance. Though it is known as the brown-throated tree sloth, this species often looks slightly green as algae growing in its fur alters the sloth’s appearance and adds to its camouflage, especially during the rainy season. Sloths have a diet that is low in nutrients, which explains why they move so slowly! Low energy food also means this species has a hard time regulating its body temperature, so they will often move into sunnier parts of a tree to keep warm throughout the day. The Ka’apor capuchin, which is found in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, are named after the Ka’apor people, who first discovered the monkey and lived alongside it for hundreds of years. Ka’apor roughly translates to “footprints of the forest”. Photo taken @zoosaopaulo. #PhotoArk @natgeosociety by @joelsartore

Can you spot the live Mexican fire leg tarantula amongst the sheddings of other tarantulas in this photo? As tarantulas grow, they shed their old exoskeletons, revealing new sensory and protective hairs that help individuals detect smells, tastes, and vibrations. Molting also helps to shed external parasites, keeping tarantulas healthy. Photos taken @vervebiotech and @brevardzoo. #PhotoArk @natgeosociety by @joelsartore

We’re celebrating #NationalFossilDay by highlighting a species that has been on Earth for over 70 million years - the solenodon! Unlike many species which change over time, the Hispaniolan solenodon is thought to be virtually unchanged, with living individuals matching those found in the fossil record. Regal jumping spiders, which are most often seen in Florida, have been spotted in the wild feeding on a type of weevil known for causing damage to citrus trees and sugarcane. Spiders don’t always have a great reputation, but despite common perceptions they are more friend than foe. They work hard, removing insect pests from your garden beds early in the spring, and continue eating them throughout the growing season. Meet Gwen, the Sri Lankan sloth bear. Named for its long, thick claws, unusual teeth, and shaggy coat, the sloth bear always seems a bit messy in appearance. The Sri Lankan sloth bear is found in lowland dry forests where their long hair may seem like a disadvantage, but it actually helps to protect the bear from being bitten by their favorite food - termites! Greater mouse-deer like this one @topekazoo are solitary and nocturnal. Males are equipped with neither horns nor antlers. Instead, they have small “tusks” or elongated canines in the upper jaw which they use in fighting. #PhotoArk @natgeosociety by @joelsartore

By caring for the ocean habitats marine animals depend on, we can save species like this African penguin photographed @hoglezoo. Although all penguins are protected from hunting and egg collecting, many face threats from overfishing, habitat loss, introduced predators, ocean plastics, and oil pollution. #AfricanPenguinAwarenessDay #PhotoArk @natgeosociety by @joelsartore

The name for this golden poison dart frog fits perfectly as its skin secretions are one of the most toxic natural substances known and can kill a person if it gets in your bloodstream. So, no touching if you have a cut on your hand! #PhotoArk @natgeosociety by @joelsartore
