🎶 In a world that keeps getting louder, what might we hear when we finally make room for stillness?

🎹 Meet @joelstyzens , a Chicago composer, multi-instrumentalist, and hearing conservation advocate. After severe tinnitus and hyperacusis ended his career as a professional drummer, Joel rebuilt his relationship with music through quieter instruments, lower-volume acoustic composition, and careful attention to space as much as sound.

Through “Relax Your Ears”, he pairs performance with a mission to help people pause, reflect, recharge, and protect their hearing. At TEDxChicago, Joel will be joined by cello, violin, and saxophone for an intimate set built around a simple, radical idea: stillness is something we can create together ♾️

🎟️ Experience Joel Styzens and "Relax Your Ears" live October 3 at the Harris Theater for TEDxChicago 2026: We the People. Tap the link in bio to get your tickets. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @joelstyzens

This is music not just to our ears.

These three musicians, composers, and teachers are challenging what music is, how to experience it, and who gets to enjoy it.

As artist Jay Afrisando says, "Sound can be imagined and music can be embodied."

Joel Styzens @joelstyzens is a composer and multi-instrumentalist whose career as a drummer was transformed due to sudden hearing damage. He talked to me about dealing with the physical and psychological effets of hyperacusis and tinnitus, the beauty of hammered dulcimer, and you’ll hear clips from his first 2 albums Relax Your Ears and Resonance with @sophiewebber.cellist @atlysmusic @robclearfield @tinkatonk
He’s a music educator who loves to help students to make discoveries on their own and we spoke about Joel’s passion for all kinds of artistic expression, and his positive recent experience at the Ragdale Artist residency @ragdale_residency
Joel’s personal story is so inspiring, and his music is so beautiful; please check out his albums (which are linked in the show notes of the episode).
