Imitation of the Imitation of the Imitation of the Bells 🔔 with @monpuo
.

What started as a silly thumb position exercise morphed into an encore in Konzerthaus, inspired by dear Mon. I especially love baroque music with clear programmatic ideas, and this beautiful piece by J.P. von Westhoff seemed ripe for experimentation and, ultimately, appropriation for cello. In other words I stole it 🥷

The transcription (Imitation x 2) seemed to work, but was a little growly due to the lower register and my own talent limitations. So thanks to the free rein given to harpsichord players in ye olde days and given the damage was already half done, a 2nd voice was worked up and Imitation x 3 was born.

Bach almost certainly knew Westhoff in Weimar, J.S. seems to have been influenced by J.P.’s playing and solo violin writing so this music could seem familiar, it might even ring a bell (!)

Spontaneous stream-of-consciousness songofthebirdsposting. Enjoying slow shifts and space between notes and trying to make wolfs (wolves?) beautiful and singing with too much breath and searching for flute sounds, all courtesy of @pirastroofficial Oliv (#sponsormeplease ) and my own laissez-faire approach to good phrasing, rhythm and taste. If that’s what you’re after, go listen to Joan Baez’s version with strings on her 1966 Christmas album (yes, really). Failing that, Casals will have you covered 🙌🕊️

A scattered, slapdash selection of some of the excellent bits from 2025, one of the all time years…

1,10 hibibidibrg by @emiliaturkanik. elite daisy chain crown craftsmanship from @connie_pharoah
2 jaäasspodspolska. I’ve been obsessed with Swedish tunes (and particularly this one) for years, this lil impromptu session with these delightful nyckelharpa-wielding geezers was so joyful and inspiring. might need to live there for a little while and just learn and play weird tunes
3 winter defocus
4 @allan_janson turning Bach into tunes and me trying to keep up and stop the spike sinking into the sand and not be distracted by THAT DAMN SKY
5,9,12 stooorhied, it IS barry lyndon
6 the best people
7 simply the best people
8 last minute arranging on the fly shenanigans. zilvinas with some delectable noodling but this goes in for foot restlessness/sock aura alone

This is how our journey to the Lighthouse began, rehearsing Britten’s 2nd quartet in the @hawkwood_cft

We spent five days together, having never played as a quartet before, exploring this music but also going for walks, talking for hours, eating together and sight-reading music. It feels so right to be learning music this way - with space, stories, debates, singing, inspiration from our surroundings and beautiful people. If you want to know more about what the Lighthouse means and what it could mean for you, watch this space! by @joep___

Kodaly Solo Sonata op. 8. ⛰️
My favourite factlet about this piece: Starker‘s 1948 Grand Prix de Disque-winning recording was so successful and the proceeds so fruitful that a plaque was unveiled above the new indoor swimming pool at his house in Bloomington, Indiana.
The plaque read „The Pool That Kodály Built“. 🏊‍♂️

“Folk music is not a primitive product, but a mature art refined by thousands of years of evolution: an art that is valid and perfect.” - @zoltankodaly_

Arranging already fiddly violin pieces (thus violating my left hand stretch) is a recent guilty pleasure. Has been a labour of love figuring out the enigmatic Passacaglia by Biber, Italian tuning for the win 🙌🤘
