As many of you know, my sister, Joanna, died eating her favourite dessert — it’s hard to believe it’s how much time has passed since then.

Today, would be the very last time she would have woken up to see the sun rise.

August 8, 2018 still feels like yesterday and we relive what happened, to the minute, every single day of our lives.

4:00pm-ish
She gets off from a day’s work

5:00pm-ish
Her and partner Marc, go for a lovely dinner — a regular occassion

7:00pm-ish
They go to Whole Foods to buy her favourite dessert, new to Whole Foods at the time (mochi, vegan — made with cashew milk)

8:30pm-ish
Joanna comes home to decompress and have dessert along side us — I happened to be home visiting from LA at the time

9:14pm
I call 911, Joanna has lost consciousness from anaphylaxis, as our mother administers CPR to try to keep her heart pumping

This is not meant to be morbid recount, but rather, a harsh reality check at how lethal FOOD ALLERGIES are.
Even if it doesn’t affect you directly, it likely affects you in other ways, whether it’s part of your job to be aware, someone in your family or your circle of friends... It feels so fresh because we have made it our job and our purpose to retell this story, again and again with our non-profit ➡️ @FATEInitiative, ⬅️ so that no one else has to live what we and so many other families have had to endure.

My sister, Joanna, died eating her favourite dessert. Think about that.

Now, take a moment and think about the people in your family that have food allergies and the next time your family gathers for a party, the next time you go out to eat.

As we reflect tonight and the rest of this month on our lives without her, we remind ourselves how valuable LIFE is and that, time spent with the people that mean the most to us is the very most important thing in life — there is so much truth to the phrase: “People are sometimes so busy with life, that they forget to live...”

Tell the people you love that you love them, every single day and as Joanna would say, “approach everything with love..” and we do, now.

A message for those, and the parents of those, that DO NOT HAVE to live with or manage food allergies..

When my sister died from her food allergy in 2018 at the age of 30, I did a media tour across Canada for food allergy awareness — this segment with Toronto’s @CP24BreakingNews & @ShanelleKaul to discuss the topic of #FOODALLERGIES in your #backtoschool preparations — snack and lunch preparations, adherence of the allergen restrictions in schools, and bullying.

We at @FATEInitiative know there’s a heck of a lot more to be aware of this year, but that doesn’t mean dropping your guard on everything else, including #foodallergy.

And always a major show of gratitude to my friend and producer @StaceMunro for always giving me opportunities to share this message.

August 25, 2018 — 4:43pm

Eight years ago today, my sister Joanna died from eating her favourite dessert. An allergic reaction to something familiar, made with unfamiliar ingredients, set in a display with insufficient labelling. Crazy.

The timestamp on this first photo would reflect seventeen days after she was admitted, this is the very last time would see her.

She was wheeled through these doors, down a short hallway, into an operating room where a team of surgeons were waiting.

At the same time, five other operating rooms across the province were on standby.

August 25, 2018 — 5:25pm

This is where we packed up the last seventeen days.

I lived in that cot.
I went home for an hour every afternoon to shower, then back to her bedside for the other twenty-three.

Every chime.
Every beep.
Every PA announcement.
Every nurse.
Every doctor.
Every custodian.
Every visitor.
Every pillow.
Every blanket.
Every word.

Every second at her bedside — still vivid. Like it was yesterday.

Seventeen days I still don’t have a word for.

August 26, 2018 — 7:41pm

Just over twenty-four hours later.

A message from our liaison at Trillium Gift of Life.

Four of Joanna’s five organs were transplanted into four people who had been waiting.

Including her heart.

That’s the one I keep coming back to. Her heart is still beating. Somewhere out there, eight years later.

Of course I think about these people. How could I not. I think about how long they sat on that list. I think about how they felt when the phone rang. I think about how they’re doing today.

This is their anniversary too.

August 26, 2018 — 10:17pm

Three hours after that message.

I take this photo of the full moon that night.
A full moon in Pisces.

Joanna was a Pisces.

I know the world doesn’t revolve around us..
But standing there that night, looking up — fucking crazy.

Like it was yesterday... crazy.

August 25, 2026 — 4:43pm

Eight years. And I still can’t tell you why it feels like it happened last night.

Some of it is what you’d expect.
Some of it isn’t.

Her old phone number belongs to someone else now.
Her email bounces.
Her Instagram is gone — deactivated for sitting inactive too long.

And then it j by @joeysalmingo

8 years today. The 8th day of the 8th month.

For those that don't know, this is my sister, Joanna.
She died eating her favourite dessert.

Eight years ago today was the last morning she woke up to see the sun rise. August 8, 2018 still feels like yesterday — we relive it, to the minute, every single day.

The timeline went this way:
4:00pm — She finishes a day's work.
5:00pm — She and her partner Marc go for dinner. A regular occasion.
7:00pm — They stop at Whole Foods to try a new version of her favourite dessert. Vegan mochi... but unknowingly made with cashew milk.
8:30pm — She comes home to decompress and have dessert alongside us. I was home visiting from LA.

9:14pm — I call 911. Joanna is unconscious from anaphylaxis. Our mother is doing CPR, trying to keep her heart going.

This isn't a morbid recount. It's a reality check on how lethal food allergies are.

Even if it doesn't affect you directly, it touches someone — your family, your circle, your job. That's why we retell this story again and again through ➡️ @FATEInitiative ⬅️ so no other family has to live what we did.

8 years. 8 things you can do moving forward:

1. Ask before you serve. Every time. Like they do at restaurants.
2. Read the label, even on food you've bought before.
3. Know where the epinephrine is, or who to get it from.
4. Learn to recognize anaphylaxis. It doesn't always look like a rash.
5. Use epinephrine first, then call 911. Never wait to see if it gets better.
6. Believe someone when they tell you they have an allergy.
7. Ask your kids' school about their emergency plan.
8. Tell the people you love that you love them.

She died eating her favourite dessert. Think about that. Then think about the people you love who have food allergies — the next time your family gathers, the next time you go out to eat.

Tonight, and the rest of this month, we remind ourselves how valuable life is, and that time with the people who matter most is the only thing that actually counts.

As Joanna would say, "approach everything with love."

𝗔𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀: "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲."

Take a trip with Joey as he takes us on a personal journey through the recipes that shaped his life and the cultures he’s discovered along the way — one 20-minute meal at a time.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗻𝗲: '𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲. 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲.' 🏠
"It only felt right for me to start at home with my family. Growing up Filipino, my earliest years were defined by these iconic, soul-warming flavours. 🥰

𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝘼𝙙𝙤𝙗𝙤: I think I've refined this classic to deliver that tender, savory taste in a fraction of the time — hopefully doing full justice to the original recipe without the long wait. 🥘

To keep the chicken melt-in-your-mouth tender, I've used a classic velveting technique — a secret borrowed from Chinese cooking that locks in the perfect texture, even in a quick-fire cooking process!" 🔥

Comment ADOBO if you want the full recipe and Joey will send it over! 📩

Exactly a decade ago, I stepped onto the Oscars red carpet for the very first time.

I was ambitious.
Excited for the road ahead.
Grateful for every opportunity that somehow led me there.

And honestly… in love with the industry.

The movies.
The process.
The chaos behind the scenes.
But most of all — the business of it.

A lot has changed in ten years.
The way we watch.
The way we consume.
The way audiences spend their attention and their money.

But one constant remains: The passion of the people who make it all happen. And I'm still in love.

Every year around this time I get a little nostalgic.
Not because of the glamour…

…but because it reminds me why I started this path in the first place.

Ten years later, the feeling is still there.

In Tagalog, makilala (mah-kee-LAH-lah) generally means to get to know, to meet, or to recognize someone or something. It implies a process of becoming familiar with or identifying something or someone...
and Toronto will get to know, meet and become familiar with our Filipino culture through food at the city's newest addition to it's growing list of Filipino eateries, @makilala.ca

From my brothers @de_la_jo3l & @paitoronto with @chefnuitregular at the helm, the Regular's offer traditional and familiar Filipino dishes, balanced and delicious, while celebrating the culture and the traditions that make this place feel like home.
Nuit shares that there is no Thai twist here; she celebrates the dishes she grew and became familiar with when moving to Toronto with Jeff and her new family, the Regulars.

So proud of the entire team for what they've accomplished in such a short period of time, and extremely proud to see our culture celebrated through our bellies for all to enjoy!
