Baby’s First Boston!!!!!
We’re pregnant and this babe is already such a champ! So is my lovely husband for supporting me in all of these crazy ideas I come up with. Cant wait for my mini marathoner running partner to get here in August!
Shout out to the City of Boston for keeping the vibes high enough to get me across the finish line and for every person who took the time to congratulate me on the course (I heard 20+ audible variations of ā€œOh my God she’s pregnantā€).
I love marathoning. But I am very ready to put it on hold for a little while to try on the new ā€œmomā€ title come August!

From homeless in high school, to Dr. Julie Donahoe.
So much to unpack, and often I don’t have the words to do so.
You know that old saying, be kind, you never know what others are going through. That was my life. Childhood trauma. Recently I remember learning about adverse childhood experiences, and realizing just how abnormal my upbringing was. I always knew it was unconventional, and most people close to me can attest to the complexities that were my formative years. I think of all the times I stepped foot outside my home and became a different person, the person the world knew. And how I hoped no one would figure me out. Call my bluff. See how much I had going on at home and make me confront it. Hiding every bad part, the lack of food at home, no electricity, no gas, living without running water in our home for what felt like an eternity. And that was the easy stuff, I could navigate doing homework by flashlight, only eating at school, and even filling countless water bottles and hiding them in my gym bag to use to shower at home. Learning to cope with that was easier than dealing with the emotional instability, and that is a component of my childhood trauma I still am working through. And so, I poured myself into getting out of the situation. Working myself to my breaking point, breaking, and learning how to rebuild stronger. And then suddenly in May my goal was achieved. I was Dr. Julie Donahoe. I had a job. A husband. A great life. And yet still felt brittle, held together by a thread or two, and realized how much further I had to (and still have to) go to process how much I went though prior to being JD PharmD. That is not as easy as learning material and taking tests. And I write this not for your affirmation of my story. But because it happened to me. I lived it, learned from it, and am working through it. And so this is just your reminder that it might be hard, but you are capable of whatever you set your mind to. And the world is brighter with you in it. To everyone who helped get me to this point, thank you.

The First Postpartum Marathon.
Chicago just might be my favorite marathon I’ve ever run… and I’m already signing up for next year (sorry Aaron).
On Sunday I was one of Many. Many who hit their goals, many who didn’t. But every single one showed up and grinded it out. I am so proud to be a part of this gritty group of badass men & women.
This training block was like no other.
Showing up exhausted, continuinely on 5 hours of sleep or after working a 12 hour shift. It was early mornings, so many tread miles, and countless gallons of electrolytes in the Texas summer.
But this training block also made me so incredibly grateful. Grateful for a garage gym (no matter how hot - and it got up to 106 while I was running), for a husband who is endlessly supportive, for a child who loves stroller miles, for a job and coworkers that are always willing to let me grab a snack q2hrs because of breastfeeding and training, for a body that endured all that training and is still producing breast milk (I fed EJ right after finishing the marathon!!!!! That truly amazed me), for a mind that didn’t quit.
But when I reflect on all of that .. I am truly truly thankful because this training block was also filled with a lot of prayers. A lot of moments asking God to take over when I was stressed or worried. I have never prayed during a race before but this one I did - I prayed for a safe day for all of the runners, I prayed for us all to feel Gods joy in our run, I prayed for God to take over my legs when I felt like I couldn’t turn them over. Moral of the story … this one is on God & all the glory is His.
I have prayed for the life I am currently living. Not one of luxury or comfort, though that would be nice. But a life with a family full of love and laughter. For my husband and my child. For a baby to cross a finish line with, to share the joy that running brings me with. The mundane is sacred and I am so incredibly humbled daily by that fact. by @joggingwithjulie

CHICAGO in 2:59.59 - a sub 3 finishing with EJ on my hip and a second to spare!!!!
EJ may not have liked the whole running to the finish line but he loved the snacks, Gatorade and especially his own medal he got courtesy of the kindest volunteers.
What a day 🩷 EJ of course has been running around with his medal all day … might have a future marathoner on our hands (only if he wants) by @joggingwithjulie

365 Days as EJs mom.
Can I just go back and relive the last 365 days before we move on to the rest of EJs life.
I’d take the good with the bad to do it all one more time.
The sleepless nights for the cuddly mornings.
The cries for the giggles.
Being your mom is the best thing.
And you are the most amazing kid.
I can’t wait to see all that you do, but stay little a while longer please.

I love you.
I love being your mom. by @joggingwithjulie

Haven’t had a dedicated running post in a while… reality is… everything is harder with a baby. Running.. Getting sleep. Working. Posting. All of it is less important.
This morning I almost didn’t get on the tread because EJ was snuggled in my arms asleep and that felt 10x more enjoyable than a tempo run.
Postpartum fitness has been a grind. Not because I pushed to get back to where I was quickly.. but because it is hard to do the small things. It was hard to do PT early on postpartum, but I knew it would benefit me in the long run. It was hard to wait till 12 weeks to run, but I trusted the women in my life who advised me to. It was hard to come back slowly, walk jogs, slow jogs then adding in speed and getting back to my old marathon pace. The only part that hasn’t been hard - the jogger miles with EJ, I absolutely love those ā¤ļø.
I have big goals for Chicago. I want to run Sub-3 hours again. I have no idea if I truly am capable (between Texas heat, pushing the jogger for runs, and terrible sleeping patterns) but we’re putting in the work and we will see on race day. This is a far more YOLO approach than my previous builds. Trying to remind myself of my old high school track motto: pressure makes diamonds.
And yea training is easier not pushing a jogger but time with EJ >> any marathon time goal. by @joggingwithjulie

The year there were no presents under the tree.
This year - there are no presents under our tree. Tomorrow morning I’ll wake up, and there won’t be anything to unwrap.
Yet as I rocked EJ to sleep I cried tears of joy. This is the best Christmas Eve. Tomorrow will be the best Christmas.
There were plenty of years growing up when there were no presents under our tree. And I am sure my parents felt guilt or shame at that. Or maybe they didn’t. There were years we got a few presents. There were years we got many presents. That’s the thing about life, it ebbs and flows, both the good and the bad.
I’m not anti-gifts, as a matter of fact, I love giving gifts. Actually, I think one of the greatest feelings in the world is finding the perfect gift for someone you love. But when I look back at Christmas growing up - I never disliked the holiday because of the lack of gifts. Truly I only remember 3 Christmas gifts I ever got: a Furby (from a friend), Hilary Duffs Metamorphosis CD (from the year we were an ā€œAdopt a Familyā€), and a North Face jacket (from my guardian that brought tears to my eyes at the generosity of it all). 3 gifts in 31 years.
What I remember is the feeling of Christmas.
The season of togetherness, of happiness and joy and peace. Watching The Road to El Dorado with my siblings at my grandmas house on Christmas Eve.
And now. As a mom. I am overwhelmed by the feeling of being together with my family. Of rocking my baby to sleep. Of knowing I got everything I ever wanted in this family of mine. And if that’s all I ever have, on Christmas Day and on everyday, that is enough for me to have a joy filled life. No present could ever compare.
And I hope when EJ looks back at his Christmases he remembers the same things I do - that we were together, and we were joyous.
Friends if you made it this far - I hope that you too find joy and peace tomorrow. Even if it is just for a day. If this season doesn’t look exactly like you want, remember life ebbs and flows and one day it will. And on that day I hope you let the tears of joy flow freely and the gratitude overwhelm your body.
God is good. Life is good.
Merry Christmas. by @joggingwithjulie
