Recently, after a period of lacking inspiration, I decided that I would start a longer term photo project. I came up with two ideas, with one of them being documenting the section of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Maryland. The Maryland section of the AT, while short, only about 41 miles in length, certainly has a lot of history.
Yesterday, I decided to go to Weaverton Cliffs, which is essentially the southern point of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. The spot is not far from Harper's Ferry, overlooking the Potomac River by about 500 feet. Across the river is Virginia and West Virginia, depending on where you are looking.
This was the second time I have been here. The first being this past spring. On that day I was doing a twenty mile run. I started at the Weaverton Cliffs parking lot, ran up to this spot and noticed the warm light on the pine trees at the cliffs. I took a few pictures with my phone and continued on down the trail and back for 15 miles before jumping on the C&O Canal Toepath for an additional 5 miles. The morning light on the trees is one of things that helped me come up with the idea of a long term project documenting the Maryland section of the AT.
My goal with this shot was to capture the contrast of warm light and shadows on these pine trees. My other observation yesterday was that I might be able to get a nice sunset shot during fall foliage from this spot. So I will probably return again in the near future.
If you are interested in finding out more about the AT, The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has a wealth of information.
Thanks for looking and more to follow.

A few from the Matsu Valley in September 2021. What a day that was.
Looking forward to the colors starting to change here. Hopefully we get some nice color this season.

I have had a long hiatus from any consistent photography practice. It’s time to change that. As we transition to fall, I’ve decided there is no better time to get back out there.

Other photographers, and a podcast I listen to, have given me inspiration to start a long term project. So I’ve decided that will be photographing the small section of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Maryland. In addition, the local Catoctin Trail offers another great option to be outside in the forest and find plenty of things to capture. Beyond these local gems there are numerous places to get excited about within a few hours from where I live.

When I originally got back here I was honestly in a funk after years in Hawaii and Alaska. Yet some of the places near me offer plenty of things to photograph, they are just different. So I just need to think different and look for different things.

I recently just finished listening to the book The Hidden Life of Trees, which is a fantastic look at the forests, and the complex, interconnected network of these environments. While the forests of the mid-Atlantic are often chaotic places, that can be very difficult to photograph, I think I’m going to shift how I view them, and use them as a way to improve my photography; to see what things I can find that are visually appealing despite the complexity.

The photo above is a shot I took in October 2023 of the tree tops that I could see from a spot on the Appalachian Trail. I always love this time of year as fall looms on the horizon and the heat and humidity begin to transition to fall. by @john.digiovanni

During my three-year stint in Alaska, in July 2019, I was asked to work at Ft. Greely for a week. During that week, I went out every night to take photos in the interior, around, or close to Delta Junction. While I stuck to the roads, the country in that part of Alaska appeared rugged and wild. I can't imagine what it must have been like off the road system.

These are images I took on this day (July 26) at the Clearwater River, also known as 'the Clearwater.' I went to the Clearwater Lodge, which, sadly, burned down a year later, before heading to the Clearwater State Recreation Area. While the overcast sky was not overly exciting on that evening, it was memorable. Previously, I posted another image of this place in September 2019 that you can find if you scroll back far enough in my feed, but I have never shared these images. The first image shows fireweed on the banks of the river. The second and third images are the same composition that were processed differently.

The Clearwater is considered one of the best places to fish for arctic grayling. I'm definitely fortunate to have seen this beautiful and stunning place. I think of it often this time of year. I wonder what is around the bend. I wonder what it would be like to have a boat and cruise this river for a while. I wonder if I'd have any luck fly-fishing for grayling? I think of how amazing and pure the crystal-clear water seemed.

The river which is 20 miles long and fed by springs of cold water, ultimately flows and drains into the giant, glacial-fed, braided Tanana River. Besides Arctic grayling, the Clearwater is home to coho salmon, who enter the river between September and November to spawn. It's the site of the largest run of coho in the Yukon River drainage area. I imagine this place would be beyond stunning in mid-September as the spruce lining river remain green and the ground turns into a magnificent mix of red and orange colors. I hope you enjoy these images and thank you for reading along.

Just over two weeks ago I was in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia for the West Virginia Trail Fest to run the Full Moon 50K. Towards the end of the race we ran down the Bail Out trail on Snowshoe (which is where the race finished) Resort - this trail was absolutely beautiful.

On the morning following the race, my wife, son and I took a little hike around Shaver's Lake towards the above mentioned trail. Despite my son wanting to move along, I managed to take a few photos of the forest floor. The elevation at the top of the Snowshoe resort is about 4800 feet, so the forests there resemble northern New England more than the mid-Atlantic or South. The forest floor was much like what I saw in White Mountains of NH and to a degree, reminded me, of the forests in Girdwood and Anchorage, Alaska. Really amazing lichen and moss, everywhere.

All the trails we ran on in Pocahontas County WV, and the Monogahela National Forest were amazing. I will definitely be putting a photography trip to this area (to my ever growing list of places in WV I would like to go shoot photos) on my radar for the future. If you are looking for a great trail race experience in the mid-Atlantic, put the @wvtrailfest on your list, you will not be disappointed. So a few photos from the previously mentioned Bail Out Trail near Shaver's Lake at Snowshoe Resort.

Today I was looking through old photos trying to finalize my last minute selections for the @naturallandscapeawards. During that process, I came across this shot, which I did not submit, but I thought was nice to share here. This is the Pemigewasset River in New Hampshire's White Mountains. I took my first, and only, trip there in early June 2022. What an idyllic place. The forests and water is calming, peaceful and beautiful. In this photo I like the deep green tones of the trees and the smooth flow of water over the rich orange tones of the rocks in in the river. One day I hope to return for an extended photography trip.

This afternoon I am looking through my photos to see if I can find anything that I think is worth submitting to the 2026 @naturallandscapeawards photo competition.

I started digging through the photos I took in July 2024 at Mt. Rainier NP and I've found some interesting shots I lost track of. Like this peak (I wish I knew the name) taken at Sunrise, as the late morning light slowly broke through the dense clouds and fog. In my opinion, the atmospherics and ruggedness of the peak, give the image a raw feel that I like.

Fond memories of a great day with @cloudbreakphotography_hi and @flogramz in one of the most spectacular places in America. I'd love to go back there soon.
