They make fast and loud music for little people, and the big people that take them to gigs. Formed in late-2019 when they began making punk versions of Australian kids books, Riot Baby write songs about navigating late-stage capitalism, pandemics, disasters, bullies, and big feelings. Featuring past and present members of Vardos, CircusOz, Tek-Tek Ensemble, Gamelan DanAnda, Teeny Tiny Stevies and more, Riot Baby play sticky carpet pubs, festivals and everywhere in between. In 2023 Riot Baby was nominated for the APRA Song of the Year at the Major Minor Music Australia Awards for their song Listen to Your Mum. @hunger.digital @majorminormusicaustralia #punkforkids #feministpunk #mybodymychoice #intergenerationalmusic by @john_ch_music
We had the absolute best time at @turramurramusiccamp with the biggest Riot Baby Big Band yet! We taught the very first punk ensemble we are aware of at a folk music camp, and performed our song My Body My Choice, and the @heartsandrocketsband banger The Man to a 70-piece folk-punk orchestra full of ukuleles, piano accordions, trombones, tin whistles, fiddles, melodicas and more. Because, like Erica says, “a girl can do both”, we loved singing in the vocal workshops with @jjflanagan, learning strings with @mickeyandmichelle, learning balkan music and dance with @aryohall, @roscoheck, playing guitar with @stellaanningguitar, making puppets with @jacquistockdale, and a million other jams and hangs we had over the weekend. @john_ch_music and our lovely fill-in drummer/percussion-section-leader for the weekend @jeremy_gamelan play a lot of Indonesian music, so it was also lovely to bring some talempong rhythms to @aryohall’s ensemble performance, and to call a Balinese kecak at the Saturday night dance. If that looks like fun, check out @gamelandananda if you’re in Melbourne, or Mugi Rahayu or @reogjangkarbumi if you’re near Bendigo or Castlemaine for more! We’ve got a quiet few months coming up. Maybe we’ll find some time to finish off a few studio tracks we’ve had in our back pocket for a while! Thanks to everyone who booked us and who came to a gig this summer/autumn festival season! We had a blast! @john_ch_music @ros.jones.125 @kirrikirrikirri Catch you at a gig sometime soon! #communitymusic #folkmusic #folkpunk #intergenerationalmusic #livemusic takeyourkidstogigs takeyourkidstomusiccamp youthmusic kidsandparentsmusic intergenerationalpunk intergenerationaljams familyjams by @john_ch_music

We're here at the end of my run of cool Bahasa Gaul words for the @acicis.studyabroad #bahasasesh. I had a bit of time waiting at the train station yesterday on my way to run a kecak workshop for @gamelandananda with @anandamgraha and Mahindra Bali, so I managed to shoot a video about the Betawi uses of "bikin", "buat" and "lagi", which have found their way into spoken Indonesian across the archipelago. I hope you enjoyed this series, and that it has inspired you to dig a little deeper into spoken Indonesian, and the many subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways it differs from formal, written Indonesian. If you live in Melbourne, and want to engage with Indonesian culture on a regular basis, one of the best ways I know how is by joining a community cultural group, like @gamelandananda--which I help running--or one of the nearly 10 other gamelan orchestras that operate in Victoria. Dance is also great way to get involved, and @suaraindonesiadance, @lestarimelbourne and @tarijawa.melb all operate out of the @gamelandananda studio in Thornbury. You'll both hear, and have opportunities to speak Indonesian, and learn more about the cultural context that helped form this language. Join one of these groups, and no doubt I'll see you 'round! by @john_ch_music
I'm back on my #bahasasesh for @acicis.studyabroad telling you about fun Indonesian slang. Today's word is Ngapain, which means "what are you doing?" I actually only planned to make 5 of these, but it seems like I promised another one "tomorrow" in this video, so I guess I need to make at least one more! An example of using today's word in a sentence could be: "Ngapain gua bilang 'I'll see you tomorrow' kalo kagak ada videonya?" I guess I'll see you tomorrow for more Bahasa Gaul! #AustraliaIndonesia #IndonesiaAustralia #bahasagaul #bahasaindonesia #slang by @john_ch_music
Day 4 of @acicis.studyabroad #bahasasesh and we're here for--in my opinion--the most critical words to have in your arsenal to be considered gaul: lo and gua. Use these correctly and you'll be nongkrong with the anak gaul in no time. Use this with your teacher and you'll be in serious trouble! Check back tomorrow for my last video in this series for this year's BahasaSesh #AustraliaIndonesia #IndonesiaAustralia #bahasagaul #bahasaindonesia #slang by @john_ch_music
It's day 3 (or should I say 'sa'?) of Bahasa Gaul for the @acicis.studyabroad #bahasasesh, and I'm here talking about Hokkien numbers. Using these numbers fluently will give you instant cred in your bargaining at a market in Jakarta (probably don't try and pull it out in Bali though 😂). Speaking of using them fluently, I just realised one of my numbers breaks the rules. Did you notice which one it was? It is what people use colloquially in Indonesia, but would confuse an actual Hokkien speaker that doesn't also speak Indonesian! What should I make a video about next? #AustraliaIndonesia #IndonesiaAustralia #bahasagaul #bahasaindonesia #slang by @john_ch_music
Last Sunday, we brought (read: collectively heavy-lifted 🙏) some of our shiny Balinese instruments down to @pbsfm 📡🌺✨ stay tuned to watch our community orchestra blessing your ears for about 20mins 🤘 Spoiler: one of the tunes we played was Tari Puspa Banksia by @yande_kings by @john_ch_music
It's day 2 of the @acicis.studyabroad #bahasasesh where I break down Bahasa Gaul words, and it's time for Prokem. It's sort of like Indonesia's most famous version of Pig Latin (no apologies to Bahasa G). Check it out, and tell me what your favourite Prokem word is. By the way, @acicis.studyabroad, how family friendly should we keep this???? #AustraliaIndonesia #IndonesiaAustralia #bahasagaul #bahasaindonesia #slang by @john_ch_music
It's @acicis.studyabroad #bahasasesh and I figured I'd dig into Bahasa Gaul this year. Are you an anak gaul? If not, maybe I can help get you up to speed! Or maybe, I'm just a dad who is ketinggalan zaman that you can laugh at... Either way, I hope the videos are informative! See you tomorrow! by @john_ch_music
