An unofficial transcript of my chat with the Pope yesterday morning:

*Br. John*: Holy Father, I'm Brother John again, with the Legionaries. Legionaries of Christ. I'm an assistant (assistente).
*Pope Francis*: Brother John...
*BJ*: I didn't get to say much to you the last time we talked. I was too nervous.
*PF*: But why were you nervous? How old are you?
*BJ*: I'm 28.
*PF*: Ah, you're just a baby. (Ah, eres un crío.)
*BJ*: I'm in second year of Theology... with the Legionaries.
*PF*: Second year...
*BJ*: So, two years of study left... I wanted to say that I've been praying for you.
*PF*: I appreciate it very much. (Te lo agradezco mucho.)
*BJ*: And it has been a great honor to be here at the Synod, praying and helping. I've been on the side during the sessions.
*PF*: You learn a lot. You hear many different realities of the Church. We have to listen to and understand many realities, experiences, and points of view, and this enriches us very much... (He spoke more here, but I forget exactly what was said.)
*BJ*: Holy Father I pray for you often.
*PF*: You pray in my favor or against me? (Laughter) (¿En mi favor o en contra?)
*BJ*: Haha. In favor. I ask Jesus to let his love fall upon you.
*PF*: Thank you. Thank you. (He gave me his blessing.)
*BJ*: Thank you, Holy Father...

This is as much as I can remember from the encounter. I will remember it always. I'll especially remember his fatherly tone and attention. What a gift to have had a moment with Christ's Vicar. Truly a blessing from His Heart.

The last two photos here are also from yesterday. I greeted him three times over the course of the day. The conversation in the morning. Then I shook his hand as he left the Hall before lunch. And the third time was with the "Assistenti" group in the afternoon.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, light and warmth, love in my heart... make my heart more like yours.

After my painting of St. John and Our Lady of Sorrows, I wanted to try to create an image of the deepest love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Legionaries of Christ are dedicated to the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Sorrows, placing each religious in the place of St. John the Evangelist at the foot of the Cross. The Johannine soul consoles the hearts of Jesus and Mary. And what consoles them most is simply opening ourselves up to God's love with trust and love... letting him love us. Jesus is waiting to unleash his mercy on the world. He is, as St. John of the Cross says, a "pressing" God who will be as close to us as we allow.

Our one purpose in life is to be loved by him, and to "make him greatly loved." (St. Thérèse of Lisieux)
