Leaving the Pews…

A small detail, but one that I keep coming back to since this day.

Last week, on September 5th, I was ordained a deacon for the Catholic Church.

The Mass began as always, and I found myself seated in the first pew, surrounded by my family and friends. After hearing the reading about the Apostles calling forward the first deacons to serve the Church, I found myself standing and answering “present” as our own names were called in the assembly. I left the pews and presented myself before the Bishop.

However, before the homily began, I did not return to my seat in the congregation. Instead, I returned to a single chair in the front to listen to the Bishop’s words to us. The first small step.

There he reminded us that we are not ordained to serve ourselves or to grow our own “following.” Rather, we are ordained to make followers of Jesus Christ and to serve Him with our lives.

When the homily ended, we stood and walked forward, not to return to the pews again. Instead, we crossed the communion rail, entered the sanctuary, and the Rite of Ordination began. The second step.

After the laying on of hands and the Prayer of Ordination, we were vested in our Legionary dalmatics and took our places beside the Bishop within the sanctuary as newly ordained deacons.

As I looked back toward the faithful gathered in the church, something I already knew finally hit me: my life was now dedicated in a new and particular way to serving Christ and His Church. In the Mass, as deacons, we have the gift of proclaiming His Word, and serving at His altar. Mass for us would never be lived the same.

Even though it was just a few steps from the pews to the sanctuary, they really represent a lot. My life is no longer my own, but is meant to be blessed, broken and shared with others.

Join me on this journey through your prayers and know of mine for you always!

Christ our King, Thy Kingdom come!

P.s. Huge thank you to Bishop Edward Burns and the Diocese of Dallas for the ordination, to the parish staff at St. Thomas Aquinas for hosting us, and especially to the RC Dallas locality for making the entire weekend possible. I will be forever grateful!

3 new LC deacons! And a whole lot more. I have forgotten how homey 😍 it is to be with my RC family. What a blessed, joyous and glorious weekend. My RC/LC family, no words to describe this gift of my spiritual family.
