Tramlines

‘Lester The Wolf’
Forgot to post this ‘Unsung‘ framed lineup during my exhibition @benoakleygallery_ so I’m using it here to announce the carving of the big version of ‘Lester The Wolf’. And here is his story of not judging people based on preconceptions and maybe to leave people the fuck alone if they’re not hurting you or anybody else.
‘Lester the Wolf’
One of the tricky things about being a wolf I would imagine is that they are rarely afforded the time to just sit and take it all in. I would guess that it often prevents them from entering into any kind of meditative state because the chances are that just as they get there the whole atmosphere runs the real risk of being spoilt by a high pitched human scream followed by cries of ‘oh no it’s a wolf’! I’m beginning to think that the whole ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ thing was possibly originally developed to provides a little respite from what must be a pretty edgy existence most of the time.
Lester here doesn’t have to worry about that kind of thing though because he is a fictional creation so none of this would apply unless I write it in. But what would be the point of that? Hi Lester! Actually let’s leave him to it, he’s just ‘being’ for a bit, we can come back later eh.🙂 by @johnapedder

‘Box shaped Heart’
I will finally get round to carving this drawing next after swearing never to do it. The reason for not doing it until now is that it’s subject is my own heart attack with the red lines showing the path (one aborted as they couldn’t get past the scar on my arm from nearly chopping my arm off at 13 and having to resort to the old fashioned groin route through the body!) of the camera that would find my blocked artery and then install a stainless steel stent to unblock it. The thing is , I thought it was a very personal piece but having finally donated the drawing to @he.art_project I found that it was a universal story. Also because my Dad suffered a lifelong heart condition I wasn’t frightened for even a second. It’s not meant to show off, it simply shows what you can learn from your parent’s who can provide wonderful parenting without them even knowing it by simply inadvertently offering good example. Five years on and fit as a butchers dog now. If the ‘butchers dog’ was vegan!❤️ by @johnapedder

‘Veiled Threats’
I need to do a session of ‘Elephant’ today if I’m going have one ready to frame in time to take part in a super exciting print exhibition being held in Sheffield in September. It’s also a chance to spur me on to begin carving its ‘Rhino’ follow up in this series that aims to highlight the plight of many endangered species by portraying them in disguise in an effort to protect them from the heinous and often legal activity of trophy hunting. No words can describe the gutless participants of these acts of cold inhumanity. I’ll tell you more when I get the ok! ❤️ 🐘 by @johnapedder

Small Mercies ‘Two of Us’
Finally the couples print as promised. I’ve stood ‘Two Figures’ on their end to better suit the format but I may put them back horizontally for their big woodcut. I suppose I could just title and sign the back and leave it to the world to decide how they might want to display them. Or is that just me not committing? This and the ‘Animals’ version are now available to purchase on the website. Also a big ‘Animals’!🖤🖤👍 by @johnapedder

‘The Embrace’
This pair will not be joining the ‘Small Mercies’ couples compilation because as a two colour overlay it doesn’t lend itself to the simple black and white I have in mind. ‘
Two Figures’
This semi abstract pair will feature as one of the ‘Couples’ Small Mercies compilation and to prove they belong here, this is the story. It will also be the next print from this project to get the ‘Big Impressions‘ treatment.
‘Two Figures’
Two figures passing one another. Who knows why. Are they complete strangers? Do they even see each other? Maybe they do know each other. Maybe they know each really well. Maybe one has simply turned around to go back and check to make sure the gas is off. Maybe the other is saying that they always do this when the bus is about to come. Maybe one says that the other shouldn’t worry about the bus because they have an app that says that the bus is still 6 minutes away. And maybe, just maybe the other says that that’s what they always say and that they shouldn’t trust technology because it’s full of shit. But no you’re probably right, they probably don’t know each other, that makes much more sense! by @johnapedder

‘Small Mercies’ Couples
Just finalising the six pairs I’m going to be printing as a compilation. Five of the six couples feature here including ‘The Dancers’, (second to top leftish). I’ll show you on my ‘Stories) and here is their story as told in ’Small Mercies’.
‘The Dancers’
It’s Marjorie and Tony, and this is the one piece of pure magic that anybody seems to witness from them. It happens at an event, maybe a friends birthday or wedding and it’s occurs when a certain song comes on. The song seems to force them onto the dance floor and almost in a daze they strip back 40 years of petty arguments and quarrelling that seems to have dulled their long relationship. And they dance together. They know exactly what the other person will do and where they will be as they briefly disappear around the back of one another and under each other’s arms. And they become 21 year olds. It’s not joyous, it’s almost automatic, but it’s really cool, and then it’s over. Until the next time. I can’t quite remember the song but it could be ‘Beyond the Sea’ by Bobby Darin.XX by @johnapedder

‘Two Old Punks’
This anti establishment couple will be joining yesterday’s ’Volunteers’ in a couples ‘Small Mercies’ compilation, and here is their love story as told in ‘Small Mercies’ a book that celebrates the recognition of a day’s bright sparks in the hope that a good one can be built around its modest optimism.❤️🖤💛💙

‘Two Old Punks’
This is an old punk couple called Helga and Rafik. But they’re not the kind of punks who are frozen in ‘76 as cartoons in school uniforms and safety pins, they embraced that culture because of their views on life and art, and they were young and outside the norm. Which is why you now see a couple in their mid sixties dressed in matching capes and geometric caps, revelling in their undiminished individuality supported and encouraged by each other as they go for a walk hand in hand. Do the blank faces represent a lack of emotion? No! Does it signify inward looking personalities? God no! To be honest they just have their backs to us! Oh sorry where you expecting something a bit more meaningful? Maybe turning their backs signifies a refusal to accept the structures of normal society or some kind of silent inner protest at a lack of original expression in a global homogenised world. No, they’ve actually both just seen a couple of ducklings madly trying to keep up with their mum in the local park’s duck pond. So cute! Committed nonconformists can get all soppy over a nice duckling moment as much as anybody, only in matching knee length capes in this instance.

‘The Volunteers’
After the success of the ‘Small Mercies’ animals a month or so ago I’ll be printing a group of couples tomorrow ably led by this gracious pair. Here is their selfless story hopefully illustrating the fact that good people exist, it’s just that their modest nature means that they are not the best self promotors.❤️❤️
‘The Volunteers’
Here you see them as they were as children in the customary ‘volunteers’ pose of one arm as far up in the air as possible while the other is wrapped around the back of their heads shoring it up just below the elbow in its worthy endeavour of being noticed by the teacher.
Every organisation, family, team, gang or friendship group should have at least one of these. They’re not the most entertaining or exciting people to have around but they are made from pure gold and if you are ever in trouble and are afforded a second to glance behind you, you will find them with you, every time.
These are two volunteers who found each other which is great because they won’t always have had a smooth ride from their peers who might regard them as ‘goody two shoes’ or ‘do-gooders’ (both compliments in my book!), and their parents in Kyoto and Rotherham couldn’t have known that when they christened their respective children Ken and Barbara, they would only be creating a few more problems for them. But they never call themselves Ken and Barbie, they are Kenny and Babs, and they are the real deal, you will not find better people. 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏽 by @johnapedder

‘Crowd Scene’
After giving one particular footballer some praise the other day I thought it only right to dedicate this print to the incredible fans who have packed out the World Cup stadiums and probably contributed more than any one team. ‘Individuals’ represents a celebration of the fact even in a crowd we still stand out as a unique individual who has never existed before and will never exist again, and ironically that uniqueness is the one thing that we all have in common. This print is made spontaneously to reflect that. Hats off to the supporters! 👏👏❤️ by @johnapedder
