Allow me to re-introduce myself 🙂

Today I reached an important non-important milestone - I reached 10K followers 🤯🥳

Not entirely sure what it means but I’ll take it as a sign that there are some people out there who like the messages, info and content I put up here on this platform.

For that I’m very grateful 🥹🙌

So I thought I may as well remind some of you who’ve recently decided to join me on the social media journey of who I am professionally 🤓

Oh and I also, along with some physio friends, run The Physio Social Club @physiosocialclub - check us out 👍

See you all on the next post 📱

“Just go lighter?” It’s not that simple.

In rehab, going lighter is only part of the picture. Pain, motor control and healing tissue all change how you load, sequence and progress strength work.

I’m unpacking it in my free webinar, “Not Just Lighter Weights”, this Sunday 18 October at 6PM Manila time 🇵🇭

✨Free Webinar: Not Just Lighter Weights✨

🗓️ Sunday 18 October
🕧 6:00 PM Manila time 🇵🇭
🔗 Link below

In rehab, many physios use a “just go lighter” framework for strength training. It simplifies the process, but it misses some big, important aspects of rehab.

In this free 60min webinar, I’ll break down the three things that separate real rehab strength prescribing from generic gym programming:

✅ How pain, motor control and healing tissue change the way you load

✅ How to sequence and progress with confidence
✅ Simple, evidence based concepts you can use with your next patient

🇵🇭Physios in the Philippines: this is a taste of what we’ll cover in depth in the 7 day Strength Training Essentials course in Manila this December.

“Not Just Lighter Weights: What Actually Makes Strength Training In Physio Rehab Different”

"Just go lighter" isn't a rehab strength program, it's a guess. In this webinar, we will unpack the real clinical differences between training a rehab patient and training a healthy gym client: the motor control foundations, the pain-load relationship, and the progression logic that actually drives safe, effective loading decisions. by @johncontreras.physio

Three words that changed how I build rehab plans: Capacity, Load, Recovery.

Here’s why I think this framework matters:

🔹Capacity: What can their tissues, nervous system, and psychology handle right now? My strength tests, movement assessment, symptoms etc all fall under capacity.

🔹Load: What demands are they facing? Not just exercise dose, but work patterns, sport requirements, life stress. Are they under loaded or overwhelmed? Have they ramped up too much or not enough?

🔹Recovery; What’s supporting their adaptation? Sleep quality, nutrition, stress management, health literacy.

How does it help me?

Every clinical finding slots into one of these three buckets. My assessment becomes focused. My exercise rationale becomes crystal clear.

Importantly it also highlights when to refer on. Unable to load tissue adequately due to symptoms? Poor sleep crushing recovery? Nutrition limiting capacity? Other health concerns? Time to collaborate.

Stop drowning patients in anatomy lessons.
Give them a framework they can actually use to guide their journey back to health 🚀

It doesn’t always start this way.

There’s usually a flare up or two, a few honest conversations, and at least one exercise they quietly stopped doing.

But somewhere along the way, it clicks.

They trust the process, you trust them, and the sessions start to feel less like treatment and more like training.

Best part of the job.

Tag the patient (or the physio) you’ve been rehabbing with.

Low muscle strength is the third most common cause of all cause mortality.

As dangerous as tobacco use!

A predictor of functional decline, cognitive health, independence, and quality of life in the decades most people are still planning to enjoy.

Training isn’t about injury rehab, pain or fitness. It’s about health.

And once you understand it at that level, the barriers to exercise can likely shift.

I don’t always feel like training. But the evidence doesn’t care how I feel. So when the benefits to training are highlighted through a health lens, rather than through a performance or aesthetics, the barriers to training change.

What’s your reason for showing up?

Not a dramatic statement. Just an accurate one.

I spent 25 years watching what happens to bodies that stop loading progressively. Not bodies that rest, rest is necessary and earned. I mean bodies that quietly stop challenging themselves.

The muscle loss is gradual. So is the loss of function that follows it. Strength, joint stability, tendon resilience, balance. None of it announces its departure.

It just becomes less available when you need it.

That’s the part that confronts me most as a clinician. Not the acute injuries. Not the dramatic presentations. The slow, preventable erosion in people who thought staying active was enough.

It usually isn’t. Not after a certain point.

So I train. Not obsessively. Not because I enjoy every session. Because I understand what I’m preventing.

What’s driving your training right now?

Clinical skillz 🔥

We spend so much time learning anatomy, pathology and clinical reasoning. But some of the most meaningful parts of being a physio happen outside the body chart.

Remembering the little details ✅
Remembering what matters to someone ✅
Making a patient feel like more than their injury✅

If it weren’t for my notes, I often still forget which side’s injured. 😂
