London Fashion Week — Day 1

I was truly in awe seeing so many beautiful designs showcased, alongside incredible models from all over the world.

Being able to capture some of these outfits through my lens made me truly delighted. I love being a part of art while also delivering art.

From cotton to couture. 🖤

This theme explored the journey from the wealth created through the cotton industry to the fashion we know today a history that cannot be told without acknowledging the Black people whose forced labour produced much of the cotton that powered the industry.

Manchester became known as “Cottonopolis”, emerging as the heart of Britain’s cotton and textile industry. Cotton grown by enslaved people, particularly in the American South, was transported through the Atlantic trade, processed in Manchester’s mills and transformed into textiles that were exported across the world.

So when we talk about Manchester’s industrial success, we also have to acknowledge the Black lives and labour that were exploited within the system that helped build it.

From slavery to industry.
From cotton to textiles.
From textiles to fashion.

Black is beautiful. Black is powerful. Black is influential.

This is more than fashion. It is history, culture, resilience and transformation m taking a painful past and recognising the impact Black people have had on the world we see today. 🖤✨

I’m so grateful to each and every one of you. ❤️

I just wanted to share one last appreciation post, because this one really means a lot to me.

Not one, but TWO incredibly rare signed kits an @england World Cup kit and a @sefutbol World Cup kit, both signed by the players who represented their countries at the World Cup.

Honestly, this was never on my bucket list because I never imagined I’d have something this special in my possession. Some gifts are beautiful, some are expensive, but then there are gifts that carry a story, a memory, and a piece of history with them. These are definitely the latter.

I’ll cherish these forever. One day, I’ll have them beautifully framed and displayed, but beyond what they’ll look like on a wall, I’ll always remember the thought, love and meaning behind them.

To the person who made this possible, and to everyone who made my birthday special in ways big and small thank you. You gave me memories I’ll carry far beyond my 24th birthday. 🥹❤️

I’m genuinely grateful for every gift, every message, every call, every post, every hug and every moment shared with me.

24.

To be born the same week as Kobe Bryant is to be in the presence of greatness. 🐍💜💛

@kobebryant said, “24 represented a new chapter moving beyond his younger years and becoming a more complete player and person”.

And to also share a birthday with @chadwickboseman perhaps there is something poetic about sharing this date with a man who became an eternal symbol of what my father once told me to be.

August 28 will always be my birthday.

I choose not to remember it as the day Chadwick Boseman left this world, but as a reminder of the legacy he left behind.

A man of strength, courage, resilience, dignity and purpose.

Not because I am trying to be him.

But because the Panther represents something my father saw in me long before I could see it in myself.

As I step into this new chapter, I look back on 24 years of life

24 years of lessons, accomplishments, trials, victories, and becoming.

To be a “Kayembe” is to carry a protector mentality. I was taught from a very young age that greatness was not something I was meant to chase, but something I was born to embody.

I still remember being four years old, looking into my Dad’s eyes as he looked into mine and told me, “You are greatness, and you will do great things.” He told me I was a blessing, a key to many, but he also taught me to be strong, to be wise, and to be careful with who I allowed access to my heart.

Then he told me to be a panther.

At four years old, I didn’t understand what that meant. But to him, it meant everything.

As a Congolese man that animal is his entire identity, I now understand the symbolism. The pride, the strength, the courage, the quiet power. The panther does not need to announce its presence it simply moves with purpose.

Today, I see myself in that symbolism.

I am a Black Panther.

My Dad knew how deep of an empath I am and how soft and fragile my heart could be. So, in his own way, he tried to prepare me for a world that would not always handle that softness with care.

Twenty years later, I still remember his words. I still carry his morals. And with every year that passes, I understand more of what he was trying to instill in me.

The boy he spoke those words to at four years old is now stepping into another year of his life.

Still a blessing.
Still a key.
Still becoming.
Still walking in greatness.

And above all,
still a Kayembe.
