As we embark upon black history month - shoutout my fraternity brother, Dr. Carter G. Woodson - I’m sharing this photo to combat the insidious, yet ever-persistent commentary about slavery being SO long ago…

This is my Grandma Carrie - she didn’t play about me, ok?! I remember her well and hope to honor her meaningfully through how I show up in this world. She was born in 1899 to formerly enslaved parents on James Island here in South Carolina. Technically she is my great-grandmother, but she raised my dad so I’ve only known her as Grandma. Most of her children (including my biological grandmother) were from her first husband - my dad’s namesake - Walter Mitchell, here’s his picture...

I’m going at my own pace, but have been making consistent efforts to learn more about his side of the family, I know he was from Awendaw, so I’m pretty sure my guys over at @sweetgrassclothing are my cousins! I did learn that his fathers name was John Mitchell, so that feels special. Anyways appreciate her beauty and yes, I know I look like a California raisin…. by @johnmgmitchell
