John Moore
.
Influential sculptural jewellery designer and utterly lovely person @johnmoorestudio in my studio modelling his own amazing work and exploring the relationship between material, movement and the body.

I wanted to keep the image stripped back and let the piece do the talking: its shape, texture and presence against the simplicity of the human form.

There’s something particularly interesting about photographing a designer wearing their own work. The object becomes more than jewellery; it becomes part of the person and the way they inhabit the image.

Back in 2019 I was contacted by Melanie Grant about featuring my work in COVETED, her first book for @phaidonpress published 2020. I was one of 75 jewellery artists worldwide identified by Melanie as having changed design.

It was an enormous honour, but one that is about to be trumped by Melanie’s greatly anticipated, second book for Phaidon, due to be launched in New York this week.

“The Jewelry Book” is a stunning and authoritative collection spanning over 200 years of jewelry history.

Edited by Melanie Grant in collaboration with an international panel of experts, this lavish volume features 300 of the industry’s greatest contributors, arranged in A-Z order.

It delves into the designers, creative houses, artists, collectors, and style icons who have shaped the world of jewelry. From iconic brands like Cartier and Tiffany & Co. to innovative contemporary designers, the book reveals jewelry’s deep connection to fashion, art, and culture.

Filled with inspirational images, the book itself is a beautiful object, designed to evoke a dazzling gemstone.

I’m thrilled that two of my fellow artists represented by Elisabetta Cipriani Gallery are also featured, Joy BC and Ute Decker, as well as Elisabetta herself and my good friends at Didier Ltd.

I have been a huge fan of Peter Chang’s work since I was a student at Manchester Metropolitan University and I even had the pleasure of meeting him once at one of his exhibitions.

I remember him saying that he wanted his pieces to be enjoyed as you would a piece of classical music, which has always stayed with me. They speak without words.

Seeing his work at Lyon & Turnbull in London yesterday was such an enormous treat. The curators had gathered an amazing group of pieces from various public and private collections for this special exhibition as part of the London Design Festival. @sarah_j_duncan spoke beautifully about Peter and his practice which evolved into a fascinating group discussion as visitors contributed their own knowledge and memories of Peter. Some even came wearing his pieces, including Martine Haspeslagh, seen here wearing a spectacular bracelet that she affectionately calls “Beasty”.

The show is on until Saturday 19th September 2026.

For anyone who watches ‘Digging for Britain’, the BBC’s brilliant show about archaeology in the UK, you may have noticed that presenter Professor Alice Roberts often wears my jewellery.

We recently connected on instagram and the conversation led to us sharing a very special moment.

Last night was the third and final night of Alice’s book tour, celebrating the launch of her fabulous new novel ‘The Goddess Queen’. The story tracks 20 years of the reign of Cleopatra with chapters written from the perspectives of both Cleopatra and Mark Antonius.

It was a fantastic opportunity for Alice to appear on stage wearing one of my large, pharaonic neckpieces. Between us we decided that ‘Pagoda I’ was the perfect choice for Alice… and she looked stunning!!

Alice was interviewed by author and critic Antonia Senior in the beautifully refurbished St Mary’s church near Marble Arch. They discussed the complex politics and power struggles between Egypt and Rome, Cleopatra’s relationship with Mark Antonius and the significance of her reign over this ancient civilisation. It was a fascinating evening and I can’t wait to read the book.

I also had the great pleasure of meeting actor Harry Lloyd (GOT) who reads as Mark Antonius in the audio book, also Luigi Bonomi, Alice’s literary agent and her editor Holly Harris.

‘The Goddess Queen’ is available at Waterstones, published by Simon & Schuster ltd. Get your copy now!! Link in bio

Please visit my website via the link in my bio read more about the necklace itself. You’ll find it under Jewellery > Wearable Sculpture > Pagoda I.

Brighton Pride and Manchester Jewellery Week.

What a summer it’s been!! One of my favorite parts was my beloved Brighton Pride which was so fantastic and felt so important at this time. I was able to share it with some of my amazing friends and the love was palpable.

@raye headlined in Preston Park and her set was nothing short of immaculate. It moved me to tears. Such an incredible talent. Raye, if you’re reading this I want to make you some fabulous jewellery!!

I normally wear some kind of head gear, which I throw together from card or foam the night before, but this year I made a proper piece from anodised aluminium and steel. I had a double excuse because it will also go into an exhibition called ‘I Wanna Be Adorned’ at Divinity Studio in the Manchester Craft Centre for the first ever @manchesterjewelleryweek

Pride is such a beautiful celebration of people in all their unique and wonderful differences and this head piece was a little celebration of me 🌈

New Dash earrings.

I had so much fun composing these from my various colours. In fact, I keep surprising myself with new combinations that I wouldn’t have expected to work.

Those of you familiar with my work will know that I have a tendency towards bright colours, but here, the combination of pastel pink with beige, khaki and burnt orange feels much softer and works like a dream.

That said, the zingy bright red, blue and greens are just delicious.

Here we have three pieces by @johnmoorestudio from the Dash collection. We love the fact that the colours are as good on the back of the pieces as the front. The fittings on all of the work is elegant making the pieces very easy to wear.
The first piece shown is a brooch, the second can be worn as a necklace or brooch, the third earrings.
We have lots more pieces in the gallery with many featured on our website so visit us online or in person at our gallery on the Barbican in Plymouth.

Another image from my recent photo shoot with @chrisbulezuikphotography who is a master of his craft. If you haven’t seen his work then check him out! He and I have worked together on a number of occasions and I find the process so magical.

There is only so much I can do to prepare, other than the jewellery, of course, and having a vague idea about the feeling I want to create. All I can do is gather the ingredients then let go and trust in the skills of my collaborators, who were all amazing that day.

I had put pressure on myself to try new things for this shoot. I prepared various props, outfits and backdrops. But in the end it was way too much. Everything superfluous was removed, all except for some large coloured discs that appear behind Jasmine in some of the shots. It was a case of ‘less-is-more’, much like previous shoots. I can’t deny that I like things done a certain way, with strong contrast, light and dark. Just a few simple ingredients are enough to let the jewellery do the talking.

This necklace here is called Pagoda I (yellow & black). I made it during the summer of 2020. It is the first of two (so far) in a series of necklaces, partly inspired by the sweeping curves of a Pagoda parasol.

After a phase of focussing on monochromatic pieces like Lacewing, made predominantly from silver, Pagoda has reunited me with colour and the magic of anodised aluminium. It builds on the flexible base structure of my previous works, this time with overlapping plates like the scales of an armoured creature. The bold, contrasting colours are evidence of my fascination with tropical birds.

Pagoda I was made especially for an exhibition called What Colour Is Metal? which is due to open at Dublin Castle in the coming days.

This is my latest piece, a large articulated collar made from anodised aluminium in black and golden yellow. I have always been drawn to creatures and plants that have over lapping plates, like feathers, scales or the segments of a centipede, because they form a protective exterior that is often extremely decorative and a means of communication. I find the strong contrast of black with yellow so powerful. In nature they are sometimes warning colours, like a wasp or a poison dart frog, indicating to predators that they’re venomous and bad to eat. We humans use the high visibility of black and yellow for our own warning signs and symbols. Coming up with a title was difficult. It has an Egyptian feel to it, as with other pieces in my portfolio, but I am also reminded of Japan. The segments curl up in the centre and downwards on the outside edge, partly inspired by the sweeping curves of a pagoda parasol, and so I decided to name the collection Pagoda. This piece will be part of an exhibition called What Colour Is Metal? at The National Design and Craft Gallery in Ireland in March 2021. For more information about the collar please DM me. #whatcolourismetal @ndcgallery @dccireland #necklace #aluminum #aluminium #collar #movement #articulated #blackandyellow #blackandgold #tropicalbirds #regal #nature #handmade #warning #powerful #symbol #japan #pagodaparasol @melaniecgrant @athousandfacets @elisabettaciprianigallery @didierltd by @johnmoorestudio
