The past few weeks have been a blur of movement, making, and conversation. As @upstateartweekend ends and the full moon rises, I’m taking a moment to consider & appreciate the hard work and the wonderful people I’ve met.This video shows the latest resurrection of the in/finite hut, now on view @motherinlawsgallery. I’m grateful to have brought it east with me, and to see it take on new life with this community and its new semi-permeable skin. Making gives my life purpose; the artists, friends, and landscape around me keep me moving ahead.The two people who helped build the original hut nearly ten years ago are no longer in my life—my stepfather passed away, and my former partner moved on. This work reminds me that things evolve. At best, we carry pieces of one another forward, and we keep learning as we go. At the opening, I walked into the hut and found it filled with young artists, including two recent Bard photo grads, a full-circle surprise. I’m proud of this new/old hut. With time, its ambitions have become clearer: a space between inside and out, for imagination, contemplation, and simply being together. Thanks @fieldprojects @elijah_wheat_showroom @gokateshoot & to all of this great community of humans I’m still getting to know ✨ by @johnnack

I’m excited to have three pieces up at two different locations as part of #upstateartweekend2026 Today we celebrate a newer ceramic piece: how do you feel about this fact? As part of rip it up and start again @armyoffrogsstudio. The opening is from 4-7 this Friday, June 26th. I hope to see you there. I’ve loved getting to work with clay, and this is one of the first pieces I’ve completed that I’m happy with. The form draws on the structure of underwater coral, or a body that is cautiously opening into new space. Its growth is tentative and organic, as if shaped by both internal pressure and external conditions. The piece reflects on emergence—how forms develop through sensing, adapting, and responding to their surroundings. glazed stoneware, 11”x 19” x 13” 2025. by @johnnack

Join us Saturday June 13th from our first Open Studios event of the summer! 🌞 🌱With map in hand meet the artists, see their studios, and experience work in painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics,and more - all amidst Byrdcliffe’s historic campus nestled at the base of the Catskill Mountains. Promptly at 4:00 starts our Writer and Performer showcase, hosted outdoors this year under a canopy of leaves. I’m excited to have a new piece "as above so below" in the “Rip It Up and Start Again” exhibition at #armyoffrogsstudio.I’ve been experimenting with weaving photographs, and this new work continues the weaving human limbs with images of the sky, celebrtings the interconnections between our bodies and the earth.I’m excited to be working with photography in a more sculptural and tactile way, and to be showing photographic work outdoors. This piece is printed on Tyvek, with water-resistant ink. for this version I created a horizontal warp and cut curves into the form. i'm liking the unpredictable shapes this weave creates much more than the grid structure I was originally working with.I’m delighted to be showing this work alongside so many great artists from the Hudson Valley. Army of Frogs Studio is located in the historic hamlet of High Falls, NY. Rip It Up and Start Again will be a not-to-be-missed visual wonderland! The opening reception and artist celebration is Friday, June 26th 4-8pm. The gallery and grounds will be open weekends and by appointment. by @johnnack

all good things must come to an end, and the #terrestrialextra exhibition @dorskymuseum has closed.i pushed myself to make a wall about how we live with petroleum (#inoneformand/oranother), and i’m so glad i did. it was a great experience and left me excited with lots of ideas on where to go next. it was important to draw directly on the wall for days on end, making time spent visible. i’ve appreciated every conversation, every question, and all the things i’ve learned along the way.it’s wild how quickly things are shifting right now. when i made the wall (two months ago) oil was barely in the news, and i naively thought it might stay that way. we live on a global scale now, and there are clear breaking points all around us. this wall wasn’t intended to demonize or celebrate petroleum, but simply to show how deeply interwoven it is in our lives — a substance that, only a few hundred years ago, we largely ignored.with everything happening politically, it’s hard not to feel the urgency of it. i'm hopeful that this renewed pride in oil reliance is a last gasp, something that will force the reckoning we keep postponing.through making this wall, what i’m left with feels pretty clear: oil has transformed our culture and the planet in ways that are both enabling and damaging. it’s on us now to pay attention, to shift, and to find ways to back off.it’s hard to hold the larger implications of our actions. it can be painful, and it slows things down in ways our culture does not reward. slowing down has become a luxury, yet it’s integral to finding our way forward.thanks to my longtime photo/art/what-the-hell-is-happening-to-our-world friend @the.susannah.slocum for taking photos of me, and thanks to everyone for seeing, sharing, talking, considering (and for pointing out that i accidentally wrote “vegan leather” on the wall twice).here’s to the future my friends ❤️ by @johnnack

i'm back at work on a new ceramic piece but not feeling ready to share it, so for now i'll share a piece i made a few months ago (and its little friend) ... working title: of course. when i spoke with some friends a few weeks ago i found myself celebrating how nice it is to work in a format that i'm not officially trained in, partially because it allows for beginner's mind, partially as an action that successfully shorts the cerebral criticism that's become the backbone of an art education, and partially, if i'm honest, an acknowledgement that photography is currently being slaughtered by tech & AI. this important change feels lost in the other carnage that is piling up so quickly right now... anyhow, it's fun, it's been a refuge for me, a way to allow my body and my subconscious to play a larger role in what i make. here's to accepting ourselves and others as we are, here's to making space to work intuitively, and here's to doing our best to stay grounded in this complex reality no matter how hard it may be. And be so cautious of the manipulative and addictive AI beast my friends, do not let it become your guide by @johnnack

I’m so happy to have made the wall drawing One Form or Another as part of the Terrestrial Extra exhibition at @dorskymuseum. It’s great to read @matt_moment’s historical perspective on the show in the @timesunion — I agree the show is “more than the sum of its parts.” The exhibition is up for another month.
