In 1950 , Woody Guthrie moved with his family into the Beach Haven apartment complex in Brooklyn. He would soon write: “My worst enemy is my landlord that tries his best to make me and my family live a life of race hate just because he so sickly chose to live his own sad life that way.” His landlord’s name was Fred Trump.

These are tough times, but, despair will do us no good. We didn’t know what we were in store for when we recorded this track, “Sleeping Soldiers Of Love”, but the message resonates now more than ever. We’ve got to fight with and for love.
Here is a little clip of Jeff Bridges @thejeffbridges singing the chorus of the tune I co-wrote with the incredible John Goodwin @goodwinartgallery , Griff from @dawestheband on drums, mixed by Pat Sansone @sansonica_music of @wilco what a dream team! ❤️Hope this lifts you up !

“Down With A Friend” is the second single from ‘Book of Stories (Home Recordings 1998-2003) and is out today. “Down With A Friend” is fairly typical of the songs Neal was writing in the mid & late 90’s, a beautiful vocal melody over a simple acoustic guitar chord progression. He added a lo-fi Casio keyboard Mellotron-ish sound over the top and double-tracked his vocals, which resulted in this sweet demo. Neal was very inspired around this time by a book called “The Journey Is The Destination: The Dan Eldon Story”, an amazing book of photography and collages by a young English photojournalist who was tragically murdered with three other journalists in Somalia in 1993 at 23 years old. Neal was really moved by this story and it spurred his own interest in photography and documenting his own travels. The idea of a “book of stories” really resonated with him and that concept landed in this song. Pre-order ‘Book of Stories’ at the link in bio and you’ll receive the vinyl or CD in early November by @johnny_irion

Just back from Groovemasters, Jackson Browne’s studio in Santa Monica, producing the debut record from my dear brother Grant Christensen. Kevin Smith @kevin_k_smith at the board, an incredible band on the floor. More news soon.

Nice to spend some time with Jackson @jacksonbrowne and reflect on our dear friend Alan Kozlowski on his birthday… And to hear how he & Kevin worked on Time The Conqueror, out today. Congrats, fellas.
Big thanks to the whole Groovemasters crew — Jackson, Kevin, Pete, and Eric. Love to my CA Family!

Thank @antimodel

“Love’s Lucky” is out now on Bandcamp. 📻

If you got my newsletter last month, you already have this one. Sign up Johnnyirionmusic.com to find out what the next tune is. I’m happy to send it your way.

Head over to @bandcamp now and pay what you want. It hits all streaming services this Friday, October 2nd, but if you want to support directly, Bandcamp is the place.

The track features my dear friend Allie Kenny @alliekennymusic on vocals. Her new music dropped last Friday, so go check it out. My dear friend Jay Brown, who plays with @chathamcoline and Tift Merritt @tiftmerritt and has played with Darren Jessee @darrenjessee and lots of folks over the years, is playing some sweet bass on it. The basic tracks were cut live at Camp Irion with Mike Stinson on drums and me, and I handled all the guitars and some keys. G Winnard on backup vocals.

Mixed by the great Paul Kolderie @paulkolderie (Radiohead, Hole, Dinosaur Jr. and all the great records made at Fort Apache back in the day:) he’s still rockin!

Thank you! JI 🙏

I met Neal in 2001, when he heard my first record through our dear friend Michel Pampelune @fargomafia of Fargo Records. Our paths kept crossing for the rest of his life — photos, albums, stages in Paris.

Neal always had that smile on. I had no idea what he was carrying. Everyone is fighting some kind of battle — kindness goes a long way, even with a stranger.

In 1997, producer @plyrzstudios Jim Scott gave Neal an Otari 8-track tape machine. Over long nights in Hope, New Jersey, and later in Los Angeles, Neal taught himself home recording — and quietly captured a collection of intimate, fully realized solo songs that never made it onto any of his albums. Those recordings are now Book of Stories (Home Recordings 1998–2003), out November 6.

At @blackwing @blackwingmusic Blackwing Music, we tell stories. We’re honored to help tell this one. Alongside the Neal Casal Music Foundation, we’re helping release this album of Neal’s unreleased recordings to share his gift with those that need to hear it. Listen to the first single, “Muscatine,” with vintage footage of Neal filmed by @rayfoleynyc — and thank you to @relixmag for premiering the song and video. Pre-order and links in bio. Thanks to team @citizenvinyl & @gar.ragland for pressing the Vinyl. @jeffhillbass Jeff Hill the mixes are stellar and true 🙏 and as always JJ Golden, the final touch @jjgolden1973

Long live NEAL CASAL 🕊
