Whatever it takes.

That intense moment when an osprey locks onto a big fish, battling both the water and the weight of its catch.

Have you ever doubted yourself 😂 I do… all the time. Every time I press the shutter, I’m like, “Don’t mess this up… you better come out great!” LOL 🤣

An Alaskan Flyby

They said Bald Eagles get really close to you in Alaska… well, they weren’t kidding. 😂 This one flew so close I couldn’t even fit it in my frame!

The funny part? After traveling all the way to Alaska, I realized they look exactly the same as the Bald Eagles we have here in Florida. 🤪

It’s just a Vulture.

A common bird we see almost every day, but I think this is my best shot of one. Vultures are surprisingly tricky to photograph, their flat, dark feathers don’t give much to work with.

Aside from that, it was just a beautiful day out in nature and there’s something about this moment that hits differently. Definitely not my ordinary day!

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a Red-shouldered Hawk flying straight at you. 😳

For a split second, it locked eyes with me as it came in head-on, and that’s the moment I was hoping for. Flight photography is never easy, but when the autofocus sticks and everything comes together, it’s incredibly satisfying.

Frozen Moments

How satisfying is it to freeze a moment of these beautiful birds skimming just above the water’s surface? 😍

And that eye detail though… their eyes are specially adapted for their feeding style. Unlike most birds, skimmers have slit-like pupils, which help reduce glare from the water while they’re hunting at speed.

I’ve gotten quite a few FB DMs asking what I use to post-process my photos and what gear I shoot with, so I figured I’d make a quick video.

For editing, I use Affinity Photo. I’ve mentioned it in almost every post because I genuinely love it. No subscription, just a one time purchase, and it does everything I need.

My setup is pretty simple:
•Nikon Z8
•Nikon 600mm f/4
•2017 iMac Pro
•2015 Wacom display tablet

I always shoot in RAW and do all my editing in Affinity Photo.

The image I used in this timelapse was taken with the subject very far away and is heavily cropped, just to show how much detail the 45MP sensor on the Nikon Z8 can retain. My editing is fairly light, I focus on bringing out what was already there rather than creating something that wasn’t.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of my workflow from RAW to the final image. I hope you enjoy the process as much as the final result, and thanks for all the questions and support!

A Screech Owl flight shot? I’ll definitely take it! 😄

After surviving the neighborhood watch patrol Blue Jay and the determined Red-bellied Woodpecker, I was hoping this little fella would finally launch in my direction… and she did! 😂

I was aiming for a perfectly head-on flight shot, but I’ll happily take this one for now. Captured at 7:35 PM, just as the mosquitoes decided it was dinner time.

Not a perfect head-on frame yet, but for a tiny owl flying through the trees in fading light, I think I did pretty well.

Eye contact

This little American Kestrel came flying straight at me, and for a split second I wasn’t sure if I was about to get the shot or get buzzed! 😂

They’re tiny, unbelievably fast, and almost impossible to predict. Capturing one head-on like this takes a little luck, a lot of patience, and complete trust in your autofocus.

Dinner has arrived!

After spending some time watching these two little fluffballs waiting outside the burrow, mom finally came in with food. The moment she spread her wings to land, both owlets locked their eyes on dinner instead of me. 😂

Be honest….

How many hours did you spend waiting for these little babies to finally peek out of the nest hole? Was it worth it?

One look into those big, curious eyes and I think we all know the answer. 🥹

The Curious Gaze

This Barred Owl gave me the look that said, “Seriously? Another photo? Don’t you already have 10,000 pictures of owls?” 🤪

Well… guilty as charged. 😂

But that head tilt gets me every single time! 😍 You can spend hours searching the forest, and just when you’re about to give up, you spot one perched perfectly. Then they look at you like, “Oh… were you looking for me?” 😂

Yep… and I’d happily take another thousand photos of you! 😉
