You can, quite rightly, claim this as coming from a position of privilege (i certainly do), but having “ticked the box” of having a #1 album last time around, the appetite for getting involved in the chart-battle nonsense this time around was extremely low amongst all concerned. Once we’d started the “how do we make a record chart-ineligible?” conversations, the idea of a complete surprise drop seemed the obvious direction of travel (it’s still not ineligible. that was too difficult).
Of course, us being us, we looked at ways of making it more complicated. Surprise drops aren’t new or even special, but they ARE usually digital only (at least initially). Shipping stock to stores worldwide, in multiple formats and variants, to be on shelves on the day but not announced ahead of time was something of a logistical conundrum. But thanks to our friends at @sorecordings @republicofmusic and the marvellous folks in independent record shops, it all went pretty much without a hitch.

and, really, to some degree it was all to prove a point.. we (“the industry”, and especially “the alternative music industry”, really) have become obsessed with metrics that are, ultimately, meaningless. the music becomes secondary to the campaign and the slow slog of the preorder months and the singles and the tracks-that-aren’t-singles-but-we-need-to-release-something-to-keep-preorders-ticking track and the discounting and the begging and the blah blah bleedin’ blah… and it all results in the audience considering an album campaign to be over the minute the chart’s published.
So, yeah. In the main part (because the odd leak of information is unavoidable, but thankfully containable), Enter Shikari fans went to bed last night and woke up to a new album. All of it, right there, to be listened to in its entirely from start to finish. Just like we used to in the olden days.
@entershikari proper album #8 under our collective belt, and it’s stil way way better than a real job.
Big ups to @roureynolds @roryclewlow @robwrolfe and @chrisentershikari .. probably couldn’t have done it without ys (😜).
