🚨 🛒 Hy-Vee is moving ahead with plans to open a grocery store at Overland Park's Rosana Square shopping center, in the space Price Chopper left in January.

The roughly 66,000-square-foot space at 7418 W. 119th St. would add a pharmacy drive-thru and an area for online grocery pickups, according to plans approved Monday by the Overland Park Planning Commission.

A pickup truck fleeing Kansas Highway Patrol troopers ended up on its roof in a Fairway front yard late Sunday night.

The Ford Raptor was headed south on Mission Road around 10:45 p.m. when it failed to make the curve near St. Agnes Parish.
It hit a median, jumped a curb, bounced off two trees and slammed into an SUV parked in a driveway on Chadwick Street, which was pushed sideways into a pickup next to it.

Remarkably, no one was hurt. The driver was taken into custody.

If you had Sally Shipley at Shawnee Mission West, you probably still remember her. (Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis do.)

The longtime teacher, who died earlier this year at 87, pushed her students to their best, and many went on to earn state and national academic honors. Rudd and Sudeikis are among her former students and have both talked about her influence on their lives.

Now Shipley's estate is helping launch InspirED Shawnee Mission, a new program to help district students become teachers and return to teach in Shawnee Mission.

Five seniors will be selected this year for scholarships, stipends, mentorship and an eventual signing bonus when they return home to teach in SMSD.

It's official: six Olathe schools will close at the end of this school year.

The Olathe Board of Education voted 7-0 Thursday night to close:

✏️ Indian Trail Middle
✏️ Black Bob Elementary
✏️ Heritage Elementary
✏️ Scarborough Elementary
✏️ Tomahawk Elementary
✏️ Walnut Grove Elementary schools

About 50 people packed the boardroom, many of them there to oppose the move. The district says the closures will save roughly $12 million as it deals with declining enrollment, rising home prices and budget pressures.

Next up: a new committee will work out new attendance boundaries, with a recommendation expected in December.

The old Houlihan's spot at Town Center Plaza may already have a new tenant lined up. 👀

Flower Child, the Arizona-based healthy eatery that made its Kansas City-area debut in Prairie Village this summer, has filed plans with the city of Leawood to open in the space near 119th Street and Roe Avenue.

Houlihan's closed there earlier this year. The site is part of a redeveloping corner of the shopping center now being called "French Corner," which could eventually include several new restaurants.

Flower Child's menu leans on salads, wraps and bowls, including avocado caesar salad, chicken enchiladas and black bean falafel wraps.

More than 90 vendors, one storefront — and most of them are local.

913 Mercantile opened Wednesday at 5330 Martway St. in Mission, in the space Painted Tree vendors have been waiting for.

Owners Tyler and Lindsey Bonine were Painted Tree vendors themselves and know the anxiety and heartache of losing their marketplaces. They hope their new space gives others the runway to launch their dreams.

Vice President JD Vance was in Olathe on Monday, visiting a manufacturer with Sen. Roger Marshall. During the vice president’s remarks, a man apparently protesting was escorted out amid chants of “USA!”

Live video feeds of the event captured the man yelling “He sues his patients” after Vance mentioned Marshall in his remarks.

Overland Park has removed more than 6,000 ash trees since 2023 to stop the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer pest.

But one neighborhood in the southern part of the city decided to save theirs instead.

A small but steady stream of visitors turned out last night at Overland Park's 9/11 Memorial on Hemlock Street ahead of the 25th anniversary today of the terrorist attacks in 2001 that left nearly 3,000 people dead.

Overland Park's memorial features a 14-foot, 2.5-ton steel beam from Ground Zero (right), and each Sept. 10 night, two light beams are projected upward to represent the World Trade Center's twin towers. The city will conduct its annual 9/11 remembrance Friday at 7:30 a.m. You can watch a livestream here.

🎂 100 YEARS YOUNG!

Bill Garton, who turned 100 on Thursday, was honored with a proclamation to kick off the Old Settlers festival.

Garton is a U.S. Army Air Forces veteran, a business owner and a longtime champion of Olathe’s deaf community.
