Isaiah Sadowski was sentenced earlier this evening to the maximum of 123 months, or 10 years and three months, in state prison for the December 2021 death of 75-year-old Barbara Patterson.

A Johnson County jury convicted Sadowski of reckless second-degree murder back in June, after only two and a half hours of deliberations.

The case comes from a December 27, 2021 crash at 127th Street and Quivira Road in Overland Park.

At about 8:30 that evening, Sadowski was driving a red Chevrolet Camaro when he ran a red light, a light that had been red for 12 seconds, and hit a silver Nissan Versa driven by Barbara Patterson.

Barbara died at the scene.

Police and crash reconstruction experts determined that Sadowski had been driving over 100mph on Quivira Road shortly before the crash.

The posted speed limit on that stretch of Quivira is 45mph.

Data recovered from Sadowski's car indicated that the Camaro was being driven at 73.8mph a half second before the impact and that, even with “extreme hard braking,” Sadowski was still driving 63mph when he crashed into Barbara Patterson’s car.

Barbara’s son, Michael Pence, tearfully addressed the court during victim impact statements and pointed out that he has now been without his mother for 1,724 days.

During approximately 520 of those days, Sadowski was on the run in Mexico.

I’m incredibly humbled and grateful to the Johnson County Post for taking the time to share my story as part of its “Helping Hands” series.

Reading this article and looking back over the past 15 years was emotional for me. When I walked away from my corporate career, I didn’t have a plan. I simply knew that something was missing from my life and that I wanted to start giving back.

I never imagined that decision would lead me here.

From sitting inside shelter kennels with dogs who had been overlooked, to helping rural shelters receive desperately needed resources, to building Kansas City Dog Treats Co. and sharing my journey through addiction, mental health and recovery—every chapter has given my life a deeper sense of purpose.

None of this has been accomplished alone. It has only been possible because of the shelters and rescue organizations that trust me, the businesses that support my work, and the incredible community that continues to show up whenever an animal or person needs help.

Thank you to reporter Lucie Krisman for telling my story with such care and compassion. And thank you to the Johnson County Post for reminding people that helping hands come in many different forms.

I’m not sharing this because I believe I deserve recognition. I’m sharing it because I hope someone reading it realizes that it is never too late to change direction, find your purpose or give yourself—and others—a fresh start.
