I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work with film composer Patrick Doyle (Thor, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Brave) on the new season of the Netflix hit-series Big Mouth.

Patrick and his team are such a pleasure to work with and I was amazed at how down-to-earth and humble they all are.

My role was in the orchestration preparation, which was a fantastic experience. It’s not every day you get to prepare music that is going to be performed and recorded by a symphony orchestra!

Season 6 has just come out and is now streaming on Netflix. Go check it out! It is absolutely hilarious! 👌

This opportunity came about thanks to the Screen Composers Guild Ireland @screencomposersirl. They do such incredible work at promoting Irish composers and fighting for better working conditions in the world of film composition. We’re very lucky to have them.

Last Friday we crossed to Cape Clear and walked the places we shoot Deoraí this December.

The water, the shore, the slip, the lane. Irish has lived in all of it for generations, and it is slowly leaving the places that should hold it longest. This film is about that.

We’re making it with the island, not just on it. Now we need to get a Cork crew across.

The campaign is live until 23 November. €5,000, all or nothing.

From €5, your name goes in the credits. From €20, you get to watch the finished film.

"For young composers starting out, I’d say don’t be afraid to attend events and get talking to people. Build your network as early as possible and grow alongside the people you meet.
And if you don’t have projects on, keep making things anyway. A self-initiated piece, collaboration or even a rescored scene can become the thing that gets you your next project. The Cue Tube also has some wonderful resources for composers looking to put together a professional portfolio before landing their first gigs."

Tá sé beo. 🎬

Deoraí is a short film about a father, a son, and the silence between them, on a Gaeltacht island where Irish has slowly retreated for generations.

We shoot on Oileán Chléire this December, with the island, in Irish. Tonight our crowdfunding campaign goes live, and the first hours matter most.

An Scéal · The Story

We have told you the word, the island, the cast and the crew. We have not told you the story.

A boy on a Gaeltacht island who has the language the way other people have a pulse, and one thing nobody will say to him. A photograph in the back of his father’s book. A name he has never been told.

He starts asking. His father will not answer. One night it comes apart, and somewhere in the middle of it the language between them breaks.

Fourteen years later, a man comes back on the ferry. He still has the language. He is no longer certain the island is his.

Deoraí. Oileán Chléire, this winter.

An Ceol · The Music

John Vallely is composing the score for Deoraí.

John is an award nominated screen composer and a member of the Screen Composers Guild of Ireland, nominated for Best Original Score at the Irish Animation Awards 2025 for The Scavengers. He has arranged orchestral scores for two time Oscar nominee Patrick Doyle on Netflix’s Big Mouth, and he is currently working on a choral setting of Patrick Kavanagh’s poetry.

We wanted someone who records rather than assembles. John works with live acoustic instruments and builds each score around the thing it is scoring, which matters on a film where the sound of a place is doing as much work as the dialogue.

The music is written into this script rather than laid over it afterwards. The film opens on the Atlantic before there is any picture at all.

Great evening last week hosting another "Working with a Composer" session for the @nationaltalentacademies, this time with the directors and producers on their First Credit Scheme! 🎬🎶

We jumped into how music shapes narrative and explored the collaboration process from envisioning a distinct musical identity and choosing the right composer, to navigating the legal and financial frameworks. We also explored how to get the most out of spotting sessions, how to give effective creative notes, and ended with a peek behind the curtain at the full composition workflow.

Huge thanks to the NTA for having me back, and to all the filmmakers for attending! Really looking forward to seeing these projects come to life!

Great weekend in Drogheda at the Boyne Valley International Film Festival @boynevalleyiff ! 🎬

The festival is now in its fifth year and keeps getting better, with Shane Meadows joining this year as a special guest!

It was also great to see Animation Day added to the programme, run by the @nationaltalentacademies . Saw loads of great shorts, panels and workshops, caught up with friends and met some brilliant new people.

Great craic all round! Looking forward to next year! 🍿🎥

This week I got to get my Strat out for a cue! 🎸
