Last Friday we crossed to Cape Clear and walked the places we shoot Deoraí this December.

The water, the shore, the slip, the lane. Irish has lived in all of it for generations, and it is slowly leaving the places that should hold it longest. This film is about that.

We’re making it with the island, not just on it. Now we need to get a Cork crew across.

The campaign is live until 23 November. €5,000, all or nothing.

From €5, your name goes in the credits. From €20, you get to watch the finished film.

"For young composers starting out, I’d say don’t be afraid to attend events and get talking to people. Build your network as early as possible and grow alongside the people you meet.
And if you don’t have projects on, keep making things anyway. A self-initiated piece, collaboration or even a rescored scene can become the thing that gets you your next project. The Cue Tube also has some wonderful resources for composers looking to put together a professional portfolio before landing their first gigs."

Tá sé beo. 🎬

Deoraí is a short film about a father, a son, and the silence between them, on a Gaeltacht island where Irish has slowly retreated for generations.

We shoot on Oileán Chléire this December, with the island, in Irish. Tonight our crowdfunding campaign goes live, and the first hours matter most.

From €5, your name goes in the credits. From €20, you get to watch the finished film.

Aidan O’Callaghan is Fionn.

In his own words, as Gaeilge: why Irish matters to him, what Cape Clear means to the story, and the father and son at the heart of Deoraí.

“Má chaillimid an Ghaeilge, caillimid a lán rudaí eile freisin.”
“If we lose Irish, we lose many other things too.”

Deoraí is an Irish-language short film, shooting on Oileán Chléire this December.

An Focal · The Word

Cianalas (KEE-uh-nuh-lus): homesickness. Not the missing of a place, but the weight of it, carried wherever you go.

It is what Fionn packs without knowing, the day he leaves the island.

Cén focal Gaeilge is fearr leat? What is your favourite Irish word?

Mood image, not a still from the film.

Luke Jason Farrell joins Deoraí as our sound recordist and engineer.

Luke is an audio professional at @ljfx.audio, working across location sound recording and audio post-production, sound design for theatre, and recording and mix engineering. He is finishing his Masters in Music & Technology at the Cork School of Music this October, and he is well connected in the Cork film scene, having worked on short films including NDA, and recording the Out of Frame podcast with local filmmakers, writers and directors.

He also brings exactly what this role needs. He has recorded live and on location across theatre, podcast and film sets, so on a shoot on Cape Clear, wind, sea and all, he is the person making sure every word of Irish we shoot actually gets heard. We are lucky to have him.

An Irish language short film. A @moonlens.studios and @yellowwallpictures production. Shooting December.

Fáilte romhat, a Luke. Follow the journey. Fan linn.

An Scéal · The Story

We have told you the word, the island, the cast and the crew. We have not told you the story.

A boy on a Gaeltacht island who has the language the way other people have a pulse, and one thing nobody will say to him. A photograph in the back of his father’s book. A name he has never been told.

He starts asking. His father will not answer. One night it comes apart, and somewhere in the middle of it the language between them breaks.

Fourteen years later, a man comes back on the ferry. He still has the language. He is no longer certain the island is his.

Deoraí. Oileán Chléire, this winter.

Huge thanks to the Patrick Kavanagh Centre (@patrickkavanaghcentre) and the Raglan Road Tearooms (@raglanroadtearoom_) for their warm welcome and hospitality on Saturday afternoon. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience!

It was such an honour to record the work of one of Ireland's greatest poets, brought to life in a new form by composer John Vallely. (@johnvallelycomposer)

How this film will feel, not just look.

The camera won’t explain what a character is feeling. It will put you in the room with them and let the space carry the weight instead. The Atlantic, the stone walls, the hills, none of it is backdrop, it’s what Séan and Fionn can’t say out loud. This film is built to be felt before it’s understood.

A @moonlens.studios and @yellowwallpictures production. Shooting December.

Follow along. Fan linn.

Just two weeks into our new term and we're already busy with an exciting project!

We were thrilled to invite composer John Vallely (@johnvallelycomposer) to last night's rehearsal to work on his new composition "In Memory Of My Mother", a setting of one of Patrick Kavanagh's best loved poems, ahead of our recording this weekend.

This Saturday we will be travelling to the Patrick Kavanagh Centre (@patrickkavanaghcentre) in Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan to record John's work. We can't wait for you to hear his stunning setting of this poignant text.

Stay tuned for more updates!
