Two sides to the same coin… either you want to be coached or you don’t.

I’m very empathetic but I uphold high expectations and standards.

I’m very understanding… of when there are real struggles and when you just need to be told to “do the f*****n’ work”

I care a lot about your results. So should you by @joinascend.hp

If you’re also motivated by divorced dad rock and a pure hatred of being average, you should join me in training for APEX

Upside: You find passion in your life again. You get your athleticism back. You build community that truly understands you and make friends all across the country.

Downside: Literally none. You can’t lose when you push yourself to be a better version of you.

Don’t know where to start? Hire a coach like I did. Coaches need coaches too!

Nervous or afraid? So were a lot of other competitors in Austin and Chicago. They ALL were so glad they competed after it was over.

Join me in FINALLY having something to train for after spending years not knowing what to do when college athletics ended. by @joinascend.hp

Some of the best memories I have are of my dad and I lifting and listening to Motley Crue in the first gym I ever walked into at 11 years old. Or crushing my brother with a leg workout when he first started going to the gym with me. Little did I know at the time that those memories would shape me forever.

I love training. It changed my life. I loved training more than I loved playing sports. The way I trained actually made me worse at sports probably. But I loved it and I still do.

Find whatever it is that lights your soul on fire and pursue it relentlessly. You can’t lose when you do that.

Sprint session. In the Jamaican Team track suit.

Cool Runnings. Word play. Laugh at my jokes.

Train in your costume. It’s mandatory to keep your street cred. by @joinascend.hp

Left the audio in for the immersive experience of being yelled at by @guiggysmalls and @coach.cat.vo for 60 seconds while you struggle with tunnel vision and blacking out pulling more than double your body weight for an attempted 40 reps.

Given this extended timeline until the next event more than likely being in April again, working on my jumps a bit more precisely while using the holiday season as a means to gain structure for the bench press, will lend for a big score boost.

How’s everyone else game planning their training for next year?

I pulled my hamstring on September 22nd. That was 18 days before Apex Miami.

I felt great the day I pulled it and my 20 yard acceleration numbers were great. I had just started the taper to prep for the competition when I pulled on my last step of rep 2 on the day.

I walked around pissed off for about 5 minutes before packing up and going home.

The following day here’s what I went through:

Vertical skips 4x10 yds
Switches 4x10 yds
Dribbles 3x20 yds
Accelerations 2x10x10 yds (200 yards of total volume)
(Inspired by the work of @derekmhansen and his 10x10 protocol)

Lift:

45 Degree Hip Ext ISO 2x1 min
Glute/Hip PIMA 2x3x3 sec each side

High Box Squat 4x3 @ 2 RIR
Weighted Chin Ups 4x5 @ 1 RIR

Machine Kickbacks 2x8 @ 1-2 RIR each side

Assessed pain, range of motion, and apprehensiveness to plan volume and distance for day 2. Ultimately I pulled back a ton of lifting volume on my lower body as acceleration/sprint volume sky rocketed to get my hamstring back up to speed in time for Miami.

I’d say it paid off as I ended up PRing the forty and all of my 10 yard splits up to that point likely due to the uptick in acceleration/start reps and further drop in volumes within the taper process. Sometimes an injury can provide great insight into peaking for a competition. by @joinascend.hp

After about 5 full days off we got back to it. Emphasizing blood circulation in every possible way.

Extended periods of time off usually leave people feeling slow, stiff, and sluggish so the goal was to induce as much blood flow as possible. Circulation will improve a lot of things for you.

I’ve always found it wise to take short periods to reacclimate back into training. Whether it be an athlete coming off a competitive season or someone who’s washed up like me, these ramp up periods can be highly useful in managing training stress across transition periods of the year. by @joinascend.hp

Miami was a trip. Hot as hell but worth every minute. The delayed gratification after months of build up came to fruition as soon as I stepped on the turf.

Nothing has given me the same excitement and energy that playing football gave me. I remember my last snap of college football 9 years ago like it was yesterday. I’ve searched every day since for something that gives me the same drive, passion, and mission driven purpose to compete and get after it.

And now I’ve found that thing… and it’s here to stay.

I don’t believe there’s anything else that can congregate that many high performing people in one area at any one given time. There are pro athletes in other sports, doctors, lawyers, business owners, coaches… people all doing things at exceptionally high levels off the field all turning up to throw down just the same on the field. It’s unreal.

Aside from meeting incredible people, you get to witness some wild feats of athleticism. This being my third Apex, I’m still amazed at the freakish displays people put on.

This is the stuff that got me into coaching. Absurd showcases of raw athleticism accompanied by everyone elevating one another to be better. You can’t kill something like that. That type of culture is inevitable.

Everyone that shows up to an Apex event wins. Put that on the next marketing campaign @apexathlete.official

For years I lost myself and gave up showing up for myself because I hadn’t found anything that resonated with me to focus my own process on. My results in April showcased that.

I strolled out of the Austin event feeling that same fire I had in my playing days get relit. 6 solid months of work later and Miami was a much different story. I’m not at all satisfied with what I was able to do but I’m also extremely happy with the results as well.

I think that’s the beauty of it. The old me would have been furious about the final results. I hate losing and I left a few goals I had off the table. But me now, I’m grateful I have a lot to look forward to for 2027 already.

There’s still so far to go but look how far we’ve come.

I thoroughly believe most people fall off their diet and nutrition because they don’t possess the social awareness of just how readily available resources are to them.

Finding “healthy” options isn’t difficult.

Meal prepping isn’t hard.

Ignoring the giant signs and billboards for all the pizza, taco spots, bars, and burger joints isn’t impossible if your diet matters to you.

People just respond most to the brightest lights and biggest advertisements.

Stores don’t advertise their protein sources or their healthy fats. They don’t put on the sign out front that there’s a special for the Greek yogurt.

They sell candy bars BOGO

Sodas are buy 2 get 1 free.

All of these things in these photos can be purchased at almost every airport and gas station but you will still come up with an excuse as to why you ordered a beer and burger instead.

By all means, have fun with your life but also understand that your choices have consequences whether they be good or bad. by @joinascend.hp

As I sit on a plane flying across the country, I can’t help but reminisce on the past 9 months of this year.

So much has changed and continues to change but just as it was when I had an identity crisis almost 10 years ago… training has remained a constant for me.

Working towards something and building up the excitement to compete with others doing the same has given me a rekindled tenacity that I lost when football ended for me.

It’s not the game itself that I miss. It’s the locker room. The camaraderie. The beauty in the struggle along side teammates. Nothing was able to replace that… until now.

I mean it when I say this competition means more to me than people realize. It’s a revitalizing and reinvigorating feeling that I didn’t realize I needed in my life.

I’ve talked about it before, when your entire identity revolves around being an athlete for the first two decades of your life, you have to input something into your life to replace the sport once it’s time to hang up the cleats. That void has to be filled or you’ll search for years like I did.

For me, this is it. Find whatever it is that YOU are after and go all in.

Ask better questions to relieve yourself of the struggle in searching for the answers you’re after.

Connect better with people by asking said questions and you’ll transcend exercise prescription. You’ll truly be able to help people.

At my first job as a personal trainer back in 2019, I took the @pre_script Level 1 course. The fundamental aspect of communication and how it’s relayed in that course completely changed my life.

Your words matter. Bad questions exist. Ask less of them and you’ll change your life too. by @joinascend.hp

You don’t really want the goals you tell yourself you have. You just say you have those goals to make yourself feel like you’re working towards something. Because it sounds cool. It sounds like what you should be doing.

It would be really cool to do that.
It would be great to look like that.
It would be so fun to be able to go through that.

None of those things that came to your mind while reading that will give you what you’re looking for. You’re not really interested in that external thing to satisfy you.

You’re looking to belong. You’re looking to feel capable. You’re looking to view yourself differently.

Nothing external will give you what you lack internally. That has to come from your willingness to embrace change. Willingness to change your habits. Willingness to change who you spend your time with. Willingness to let go.

You can’t obtain what you’re after without change.
