“My mommy's mitochondria doesn't work that well.” 💛

These are the words of our founder, @mitzisolomon's children, sharing what it’s like when mitochondrial dysfunction affects the person you love most. When mitochondria don’t function properly, energy, health, and daily life can look very different.

This is why Countdown for a Cure was started. Born from one family’s lived experience, unanswered questions, and a gap in science that could no longer be ignored.

Mitochondrial dysfunction impacts millions, yet research remains critically underfunded. By supporting CFAC, you’re helping fund the science that brings understanding, treatments, and hope to so many families.

Because cellular energy matters. ✨

Our bodies aren't silos. But medicine still treats them that way.
Organ by organ. System by system. Disease by disease. Too often treating symptoms without addressing the underlying biology.

But one foundation connects them all: cellular energy.
Every organ and system depends on mitochondria to help power its cells. When mitochondrial function falters, whether through genetics, aging, lifestyle, or environmental exposures, the effects ripple across the body.

Across disease and aging, one common denominator emerges:
MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION.

That's why Countdown is bringing mitochondria from the margins to the center of how we understand, prevent, and treat disease, optimize health, and extend healthspan and lifespan.

Our six interconnected research pillars guide a coordinated approach to funding bold, high-reward science across:

- Early Detection & Precision Diagnostics
- Chronic Disease & Aging
- Women's Health & Hormonal Longevity
- Primary Mitochondrial & Rare Genetic Disease
- Mental Health, Brain Energy & Cognitive Resilience
- Advanced Therapeutics & Frontier Innovation.

Research across these pillars builds on shared mitochondrial biology, creating opportunities for discoveries in one area to advance understanding across others.

The work is already underway, from mitochondrial transplantation to restore damaged muscle tissue to blood-based MitoScores designed to measure mitochondrial content, quality, and function.

But advancing this science takes all of us.

Fund the research. Sponsor and attend the Evening of Energy Gala on January 30, 2027 in Atlanta. Share our mission with someone who believes in transforming the future of human health.

Mental health. Cellular energy. A connection we cannot overlook.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re bringing attention to the biology behind brain health, and why mitochondria belong in the mental health conversation.

Mitochondria produce the energy that powers brain cells and regulate cellular communication and responses to stress. These functions are essential to how the brain works.

Research has identified mitochondrial dysfunction in conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Understanding its role is an important step toward identifying new paths to treatment.

For people living with mental health challenges and the families supporting them, better answers cannot come soon enough.

That’s why Mental Health, Brain Energy & Cognitive Resilience is one of Countdown’s six research pillars. We’re accelerating mitochondrial science and medicine to bring cellular energy to the center of human health, including mental health.

Hear from @chrispalmermd, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Countdown Scientific and Medical Advisory Board member. An expert in metabolic psychiatry, Dr. Palmer explores the connections between brain energy, mitochondria, and mental health in this conversation with @metabolicmind.

At the 2026 Evening of Energy Gala, Douglas C. Wallace, PhD, often called the father of mitochondrial medicine and the first recipient of the Countdown Award, reminded us why this work matters. We’re grateful for Doug’s pioneering contributions and his continued leadership on Countdown’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Board.

Life depends on energy. Mitochondria make it possible. Advancing our understanding of this foundational biology is essential to the future of human health.

Doug’s message underscored the importance of supporting promising young scientists so they can build careers in mitochondrial research and pursue the discoveries of tomorrow. Philanthropy plays a vital role alongside public research funding, helping bold ideas gain momentum and ensuring scientific talent has the opportunity to flourish.

The Evening of Energy brings our community together to turn that commitment into action, funding research and supporting the scientists moving mitochondrial medicine forward.

Join us on January 30, 2027, at the St. Regis Atlanta to champion the next generation of mitochondrial scientists and bring cellular energy to the center of human health.

Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Confirm your sponsorship by October 30th to be included on the printed invitation.

Mitochondria were everywhere in Chicago. ⚡
Countdown was honored to be part of the @homehopeorg Summit, surrounded by clinicians, scientists, health leaders, and companies working at the forefront of human health.

Our Founder & President, @mitzisolomon, took the stage to share why Countdown is investing in mitochondrial science and bringing together science, philanthropy, and industry to accelerate discoveries toward human impact. She also shared how Countdown is taking a bold approach to funding research through initiatives like 1% for Mitochondrial Research and brand partnerships with companies like @young_goose_skincare, creating a way for consumers to participate in philanthropy and help advance research through the purchases they already make.

One of the clearest takeaways from the weekend? Across conversations about the brain, heart, metabolism, nutrition, longevity, and more, mitochondria and cellular energy were woven throughout. Different disciplines and different perspectives, increasingly pointing toward the same fundamental biology.

Thank you to the @homehopeorg community, including @tedace, @drscottsherr, @boomersnh, @jupkuipers, and @jodi.duval, for bringing together such an incredible group.

And to the many speakers who shared their expertise and perspectives across science, health, and business, including so many who put mitochondrial health at the center of the conversation: @jj.virgin, @dryurth, @kiranbiome, @dr_abidhusain, @drluciaaronica, @dominic.dagostino.kt, @pathanaway, and Dr. Allen Bookatz.

The momentum is building, and there are many ways to be part of it. Sponsor our 4th annual Evening of Energy, connect with us about brand partnership opportunities, share our mission with your community, or make a donation to help advance mitochondrial research.

The leaves aren’t the only thing changing this fall.

As daylight shrinks and we spend more time indoors, our environment changes the signals our cells receive, too.

Mitochondria are constantly responding to those signals. Light helps set the circadian rhythms that coordinate cellular metabolism. Movement stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis. Sleep supports cellular maintenance and repair. Nutrition helps support our antioxidant defenses. And the air we breathe can influence oxidative stress.

That makes fall a good time to reset a few of the everyday inputs that support cellular energy:

☀️ Get outside for morning light.
🌬️ Pay attention to indoor air quality.
🥬 Fill your plate with colorful seasonal plants.
🚶 Keep moving as temperatures drop.
🌙 Let darker evenings cue an earlier wind-down.

None of these is a “mitochondrial hack.” They’re simple inputs that work with the biology your cells already use to produce energy, adapt, and repair.

What’s your first fall reset?
