Good luck to all the ARDA dancers performing at CYD this weekend! 🙌 Give it everything and enjoy every minute.

Here are three of their talented dancers who’ve already worked their magic in front of my camera. Always a pleasure to see what they bring to the studio!
The amazing Sapphire, Sienna and Primrose.
Apologies if I’ve photographed you and you’re performing too but haven’t made it into this post — I’m cheering you all on!

And to the ARDA dancers who haven’t been yet… what are you waiting for?

Backbend variations with the amazing Grace
I love exploring how much we can do with a shape like this. Change the lighting, take the edit in a different direction, and the whole mood shifts — different details emerge, the curves stand out, and each photograph has its own character.

The dancer brings the strength and the beautiful line. My job is to see what else we can make of it.

Classical ballet deserves to be photographed properly. The line, the placement, the strength behind something that looks effortless.
Leaning into the style I liked when I first became aware of dance photographs- the old master backdrop beloved by the greats of ballet photography

Ava is a very talented ballet dancer, and a pleasure to work with. There’s so much to explore when a dancer brings this level of ability and you give them the time and attention to show it.

After more than 14 years photographing dancers, classical ballet remains at the heart of what I do. Knowing when to guide, when to refine and when to press the shutter — that experience matters.

Beautiful ballet. Photographs to be proud of.

You don't have to do ballet- but it really helps!

Rebekah bringing together so much of what I’ve always loved photographing! Powerful jumps, contemporary lyrical shapes, and a big skirt given plenty of room to fly.

Then a change of mood on the new dark ballet set, which I’m liking very much indeed. It’s bringing a lovely sense of drama to the ballet photographs. It works in black and white very well too.

This is the joy of having time to explore during a shoot. Different outfits, different ideas, and the chance to show just how versatile a dancer can be. Rebekah gave me plenty to work with!

More additions for the studio are ongoing!
The human body in flight is a wonderful thing.

Adelina making quite an impression! Beautiful shapes and fabulous fabric shots — love the movement, drama and variety we created together.

Imagine giving your dancer this for Christmas. Two hours with the studio all to themselves, gorgeous fabrics, different sets and props, and my guidance throughout. Time to experiment, feel fantastic and create photographs they’ll be proud to show everyone. And you get to watch it all unfold.

The Register to Win diary is now open over the Christmas period and into the new year — a brilliant present and something special to look forward to!

Enter Register to Win for the chance to win a studio shoot invitation. Let’s see what we can create with your dancer!

Two sisters, Anaya and Nelia, a shared shoot and plenty of ideas between them!

Some cracking jumps with the fabrics, and a skirt shot that turned into something unexpectedly arty — I love it when that happens.

Lovely for them to share the experience, cheer each other on and have photographs both individually and together. by @jonapplegatephotography2
