Hellborg and Wal. "My first Wal I bought at MUG in Gothenburg late 70's. It was a Pro IIE. After I became an Aria endorser I ran into Wal and Pete (the original duo who made these fantastic instruments) at the Frankfurt Musikmesse. They very kindly offered to build me something so I suggested a fretted/fretless doubleneck. They already had built the triple neck for Roger Newell so it was not entirely new territory. I was over in High Wycombe (location of Wal workshop at the time) to be involved in the development. On the 1st of July I was in Paris for rehearsals with John McLaughlin the bass was ready and Pete (the Fish) came over with the Rolling Stones mobile recording studio (his side gig) to record a double bill concert with Santana and Bob Dylan. That is were we met and he handed me this exquisite creation. That is where the pic is from, you can see that I am very happy. I still have it, in fact I just played about an hour ago. :)" Jonas Hellborg, Nov 2 01:39 AM #jonashellborg #hellborgsignature #walbass #walbasslovers #doubleneckbass #JohnMcLaughlin #petethefish by @jonas_hellborg

In the summer of 1989 Jonas Hellborg went on tour with Trilok Gurtu in Europe to support Gurtu's Usfret album. The rest of the line up was Palle Mikkelborg - trumpet, Daniel Goyone - piano, keyboards, Shohba Gurtu - vocals. It was a wild ride up and down the Continent ending early in Italy when Trilok's elderly mother Shoba could not handle the intense travelling any more. It was a strong and unique sounding group that really would have deserved a recording of its own. The Usfret record was amazing as well, featuring Don Cherry, L Shankar and many other great musicians. Photo by Elio Guidi. Without the string there is no sound the string comes first. So how does the string shape your sound. What in the parameters of dimension, tension, material, rigidity, corrosion, contamination (ie dirt resistance) etc affects how you interact with your strings in order to make them sound the way you imagine. This lecture aims to explain how strings can be, and are made in order to influence these parameters and their impact on sound. by @jonas_hellborg
