🔑 Welk verhaal draagt jouw lichaam met zich mee?

Achter slot en grendel zitten herinneringen, momenten en verhalen verscholen. Soms blijven ze verborgen, soms tonen ze zich aan de oppervlakte.

In de 'Subdurmal' reeks van Jonas Vansteenkiste wordt het lichaam architectuur en drager van herinneringen. De sleutelgaten in de keramische armen lijken toegang te geven tot iets wat zich niet zomaar laat lezen. De titel verwijst naar een piercingtechniek waarbij iets onder de huid wordt ingebracht: zichtbaar aan de buitenkant, verborgen eronder.

Ook de ex-voto vormt een belangrijke inspiratiebron. Lichaamsdelen in keramiek, was of metaal werden eeuwenlang geschonken als dragers van een gebed, belofte, wens of dankbaarheid. Een manier om iets wat niet zichtbaar is toch een vorm te geven.

HOSTILE ARCHITECTURE — JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY, USA
What happens when the spaces we inhabit begin to decide where we can go, how we move, who belongs — and who doesn’t?
I’m deeply honoured to present Hostile Architecture at James Madison University, Virginia, bringing together photography, sculpture, video and architectural research.
I’m developing an international artistic practice around architecture, psychological space, exclusion, control and belonging — investigating the often invisible ways in which our built environment shapes human behaviour.
From bollards and barriers to fences, benches and borders, architecture can protect us, guide us, welcome us — but it can also quietly exclude, control and form us.
For me, the exhibition is not only about architecture.
It is about power, vulnerability, freedom and the spaces we navigate .
The JMU presentation is expanded with screenings of my video works Mr. House and A Note in Hausmann, opening further layers of storytelling, memory, power and the transformation of urban space.
I’m incredibly grateful to the James Madison University team, faculty and students, and to everyone who made this presentation possible — with the generous support of the Flemish Community.
This exhibition marks another step in an expanding international practice — and I’m looking forward to the conversations, collaborations and places that will shape what comes next.

🌿 SOTTOBOSCO — In the shade of the tall trees
A special collaboration between artists Arnaud Rogard and Jonas Vansteenkiste, initiated by vzw Wit.h, with the support of EKWC and presented at Museum Dr. Guislain.
Through ceramics and the image of the house, the artists explore personal memories, identity and the meaning of home. By combining their individual ceramic houses into new shared structures, they create a dialogue between different experiences and perspectives.
As part of Sottobosco, the project celebrates hidden talents, unexpected connections and the richness that emerges when different worlds meet. 🌱🎨

What does it mean to feel at home?
In Mr. House, Jonas Vansteenkiste explores the house as more than a physical structure: a place shaped by memory, identity, belonging and the subconscious.
As Sara Jaspan highlights in her essay Make Yourself at Home, the familiar domestic space becomes something unsettling, inviting us to question our relationship with home and the boundaries between comfort and confinement.
Through video, architecture and psychological tension, Vansteenkiste transforms the everyday into an experience that stays with us long after we leave.
Because a house is never just a house. MR. HOUSE — WHEN A HOUSE BECOMES A STATE OF MIND.
What is a house, beyond its walls? A shelter, a promise of security, a place of belonging — or perhaps a structure that confines us?
With Mr. House, Belgian visual artist Jonas Vansteenkiste explores the complex relationship between architecture, psychology, identity and the spaces we inhabit, both physically and mentally.
For Vansteenkiste, a house is never just a building. It carries expectations, memories, desires and fears. It represents our longing for a place to call home, while raising questions about the boundaries, structures and invisible pressures that shape our lives.
Through his distinctive artistic language, Vansteenkiste transforms architecture into a psychological landscape. The familiar becomes unfamiliar, and the house becomes a mirror in which we can recognise fragments of ourselves.Having been presented internationally, Mr. House continues to offer exciting possibilities for galleries, museums, contemporary art institutions and curators seeking work that creates a meaningful dialogue between art, space and the human condition.

Today’s expert meeting, “The Ceramic Workshop of the Future,” at the Princessehof in Leeuwarden brought together inspiring voices from the world of ceramics to reflect on an important question:
How can we shape a more sustainable future for ceramic practice?
From materials and energy use to education, innovation and new ways of working, the discussions highlighted both the challenges and the opportunities ahead.
It was inspiring to exchange knowledge, question current practices and imagine what the ceramic workshop of tomorrow could look like.
A future where creativity and craftsmanship go hand in hand with responsibility, innovation and sustainability.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this valuable conversation. The future of ceramics is something we create together. 🏺🌱

It was a great pleasure to welcome our colleagues from the China Academy of Art to the Ceramics Department at the Rietveld Academie.
Our first meeting was inspiring and enriching. It was fascinating to discover both the similarities and differences between our educational approaches, and to exchange ideas, experiences, and perspectives.
We hope that this first encounter will be the beginning of future collaborations and meaningful exchanges between our two institutions.
A special thank you to our director, Miriam Bestebreurtje, and my colleague and lecturer Samantha Thole for the fantastic organisation. Many thanks also to my colleague Finn Overdevest for the logistical support, and to Benedetta Pompelli for her insightful and knowledgeable tour.
