Have you ever imagined a prince 👑 who was also a composer 🎼 and… a confessed murderer? 👀💀

•Carlo Maria Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa (1566–1613)•

(And, by the way, one of the Renaissance composers who pushed chromaticism and harmony to their most extreme limits — writing around 1600 passages that can still sound surprisingly modern to our ears today. 🎶)

With “Wunderkammer: Mr. Telemann’s Cabinet of Curiosities”, recorder player @maxvolbers and @ilpdo explore the astonishing variety of Georg Philipp Telemann’s music. The upcoming album presents a composer full of imagination, humour and expressive range, with works that turn characters, moods and stories into sound.
The first single, “Hanakian Dance”, arranged by Volbers himself, transforms the finale of Telemann’s Twelfth Flute Fantasia into a dazzling orchestral rondo inspired by Eastern European folk traditions.
Volbers and Il Pomo d’Oro give its lively dance rhythms a fresh and playful voice.

Who takes care of rhythm, tempo and harmony, all at once?

That’s why ensemble/orchestra bass players will benefit from playing and/or dancing some Salsa 💃😛🎶

(And by “bass”, I mean the whole family of instruments.)
(And by “Salsa”, I mean any kind of folk music🤘🏾)

Perhaps it also helps you avoid a Maestro like Toscanini shouting Italian swear words at you in front of everyone. 😛

The Dragon of Wantley: one of the most successful comic operas of 18th-century England – and to this day a charming, original comment on Handel’s brilliantly exaggerated heroic characters.

Johann Friedrich Lampe

A burlesque opera in three acts (1737)
Libretto by Henry Carey after an eponymous ballad by an unknown author (1685)

“Sing, sing, and rorio,
An Oratorio
To gallant Morio of Moore-Hall.”

The final choir of The Dragon of Wantley, a burlesque opera by John Frederick Lampe (1737), is a satirical finale that cleverly mocks the grandiose, over-the-top Oratorio choruses popularized by George Frideric Handel.

Stay tuned for the upcoming release of our live recording of this little-known opera. 🎭
