RUNAWAYS
Feature Film – In Development

“Two best friends, chasing youth.”

Overwhelmed by the weight of growing up and the responsibilities that come with it, a man abandons everything and sets out for a remote town cut off from technology and the modern world. But when his aimless childhood best friend unexpectedly joins him, the escape becomes a chaotic road trip in search of the freedom they once had in their youth…

I’m excited to be developing RUNAWAYS as my next feature film, a grounded buddy road comedy about chasing the freedom we once had and confronting the hard truth that you can’t outrun adulthood.

The race is on to prove we’re not alone…

In the quiet country town of Drapery Falls, strange signals are transmitting into the far reaches of space. Best friends Jack and Benji are convinced it’s proof of alien life—and they’re determined to uncover the truth. But they’re not the only ones listening. Something else has intercepted the signal… and it’s getting closer. With just three days before Jack is forced to move away forever, the boys set off on one last adventure to solve the mystery—and maybe save more than just their friendship.

I’ve always been drawn to nostalgic adventure stories, but Gun Metal Max was the first time I brought that passion to the screen.

It was my first step into writing and directing a retro inspired story. A short film and proof of concept about a fictional robotic superhero who is pulled from the pages of a mysterious comic book and stranded in the real world, where he needs the help of a young boy to save it.

The idea came to life after discovering @iamtimecop1983 nostalgic synthwave sound that instantly sparked my imagination. I was incredibly fortunate to feature Jordy’s music in the film where it became the foundation of the soundtrack and helped define its identity.

Looking back, Gun Metal Max marked the beginning of my love for 80s inspired genre filmmaking. It laid the foundations for many of the themes and ideas I would continue to explore in my feature film Stargazers and next film project Runaways.

The feature screenplay for Gun Metal Max has been sitting on the shelf for a few years now, and every so often I find myself wondering what it would be like to finally bring that world to the big screen.

Who knows… maybe one day.

How do you turn an idea into a feature film?

At @romfordfilmfestival , writer and director Jonathan Brooks discusses the origins of Stargazers, the challenges of producing an ambitious independent Sci-Fi Adventure, and the journey from script to screen.

From building the world of the film to working with cast and crew across the production, this conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring an independent feature to life.

A fantastic afternoon at @romfordfilmfestival screening Stargazers and taking part in a post-screening Q&A.

It was a pleasure to discuss the making of the film with the audience alongside writer/ director @jonathanbrooksdirector , Director of Photography @jon_moy and cast @henryrichardsactor , @lauren_cornelius and @neiljamesactor . We covered everything from production challenges and visual effects to character development and bringing the story to life on an independent budget.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the screening and to the Romford Film Festival team for their support and hospitality.

Really proud to share that Stargazers has won Best Original Score in a Feature Film at the International Sound & Film Music Festival in Croatia 🎼🏆

Huge congratulations to our incredible composer @stuarthancockcomposer , whose score brought so much emotion, scale and identity to the film from the very beginning. A very well deserved recognition.

What makes this especially exciting is the strength of this year’s international nominees, with composers and productions from across the world recognised by the festival.

This year’s festival also included special guests @simonpegg and Ciaran Hinds, making the event an even more memorable one to be part of.

We’re very grateful to @isfmf_dreamaker for the award and support of the film and its music.
