lessons from transitions

Perspective is a funny thing. 7 years ago, as I was moving to Rwanda, that transition felt like my “to the ends of the earth” move. Stepping into the wild unknown and trusting the voice of the one who calls.

It’s now been a whole 365 days since I left Rwanda. And that move back to the UK felt exactly the same way.

Here are some lessons I’ve learned from those transitions.

- don’t get lost in transition -
Find your footing. We may move geographically, but our hearts must stay rooted spiritually. Trellises are made for allowing vines to grow upwards. Trellises look like places, people, and patterns.

- let the ground rest -
After a season of harvest, farmers allow the ground to rest. Allowing the ground to rest and fallow before planting again is what precedes a season of fruitfulness. Sometimes the greatest ministry we can partake in is our personal daily devotion of being at the feet of Jesus.

- pace yourself -
How you finish one season determines how you transition into the next. It’s tiring running races that weren’t meant for you.

- fix your posture -
Gratitude grows deeper when you can thank God for what you don’t have. If the Lord is your Shepherd, you have everything you need for this season, and He’ll provide what you need for the next.

- faithfulness precedes fruitfulness -
God can do a lot with a little. Even mustard seed size faith move mountains. So can you imagine the fruit that can grow?
Remain in His pastures, drink from living waters, and watch fruit come at the right time.

May you run into those wide open spaces of grace (see Psalm 18:19). by @jonathanlall

1000km in the land of a 1000 hills

31st August 2023 I set off for my first ever bikepacking trip. Two years later, I’ve finally finished the video.

Here’s to the dreamers.

With the #uciworldchampionship coming to #kigali2025, here’s an alternative view of what cycling on the off routes of Rwanda looks like.

gratitudes from the highlands and heartaches

“Thankful for every lonely time that made me draw closer to You.
Thankful for the wilderness that made me thirst for Your presence.
Thankful for every emotional and physical scar that declares You as my healer.
Thankful that even when there’s pain in the night, Your mercies are new every morning.
Thankful that You only ask me to come like a son.
Thankful for every stranger that became family.
Thankful that even when the closest of people turn their face, You’re with me on the narrow road.
Thankful that moving mountains only require a little bit of faith.
Thankful that every grey hair gained may be a sign of wisdom learned (hopefully).
Thankful that being at Your feet is the highest I have to climb.
Thankful that even when church buildings close, Your Bride is still alive.
Thankful that in all my mess, Your grace is still sufficient.
Thankful that in all things, You are still good and You are still on the throne.”

First visiting 7 years ago, God used the wet season of Rwanda to spring life into the dry season of my heart.

I then came as a 24 year old boy. I pray I left as a 30 year old son. I thought I came to teach the gospel, but I left learning more than I ever taught. In all the mountains that I saw move, my stubborn heart and mind were the biggest ones.

I stand in the exact same place, years and seasons apart, with joy that harvest has come for this family.

After spending 6 years in Rwanda, my hope is the same - I hope that I was fruitful.

everything has its time

Super excited for all this year has to bring, with church vision and personal goals. I was met with setback, after setback. Week, after week in January had bad news around the corner and an accident that was millimetres from ending my life.

But one thing I’ve learned through it all - my ship will wreck, but my life will be spared (see Acts 27-28).

There’s never a good time for bad news, but there’s always a good time to step back and get some perspective.

Reading through Paul’s hardships in Acts and putting them in contrast to mine, brings a great humbling but sense of comfort and peace.

By no means of his own fault, Paul finds himself shipwrecked on Malta. This name is literally translated in Greek as “honey”. Meaning this was a promised land for Paul. Even though it probably didn’t look like it, it brought him a place of refuge, strength, and was the very place he needed to find rest in order for him to fulfil his mission of going to Rome.

Ships were made to sail, not to be docked forever. But in the event of a wreck, their planks will provide reminders of grace to lead you safely to shore.

Malta wasn’t my hope or intended destination, but, it’s been my place of restoration before I carry on. As long as I’m still alive and breathing, I have a purpose and reason. I just hope I’m living it to the full measure.

Here are some moments of those “planks of grace” in the first quarter of this year.

30 - practice makes progress

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! I don’t usually celebrate my birthday, but I felt like the big 3-0 was worthwhile. More than to celebrate me, but to celebrate the people around me. If there’s one lesson I’ve learned the most in my 20s it’s this - life is nothing but a reflection of the people you surround yourself with.

Thank you to every single one of you in these photos and in my life, day to day.

I remember working in Musanze, sitting in @cremarwanda around July 2020 and God placing a burden to pray for this city. 4 years later, I would have never thought that it was going to turn into planting @freedommusanze and making a community. And I certainly wouldn’t have thought this would all happen before my 30s.

A little is a lot when it’s in Gods hands. Here’s to the God of immeasurably more.

V - five years in Rwanda

I remember listening to this song on the bus radio from Kigali to Musanze. I didn’t know the words at first, but there was something about the heart singing it that connected to mine. Maybe it was something in the words and expression that epitomised what God has been doing in my relationship with Him. A friend like no other.

X - nabonye umukunzi mwiza

August 2nd 2014, in a field somewhere on the border of England and Wales. That’s where I crossed the border of my old life, and entered into a new life.

From having a heart that hated life and others, I now see Your heart and life in everyone that You chose to die for and save.

From not wanting to step outside my room to jumping into the deep. That’s where I have learned to love Your teaching and find family along the way.

From wanting to see You in higher places, to now being called to lead in higher places. Life really is a reflection of the people you surround yourself with.

From what I thought was accepting the call to plant a church, You were planting the church in my heart.

It’s seems to be the case, that the more I step into the unknown things of faith, that it’s the more I get to know of The One who loved me first.

Though I have climbed all the highest peaks, volcanoes and mountains in Rwanda, I know that I am yet to see the highest peaks of Your love.

It’s been 10 years since I have a found a great friend (nabonye umukunzi mwiza). And I know it’s only the beginning. taken in Rwanda the Heart of Africa by @jonathanlall

XL - Cheers to 40 Years

Thank you for your love.
Thank you for your adventures.
Thank you for your sacrifices.
Thank you for never taking the easy option.
Thank you for the grace I didn’t deserve.
Thank you for always putting us first.
Thank you for the example you laid down for us, and many others.

I could keep on thanking you for specific things. But above all, thank you for showing me Jesus.

Happy 40th anniversary mum and dad! I hope I can be just half as incredible as you guys are when I grow up. taken in Rwanda by @jonathanlall

I fell in love with cycling Jan ‘23. So much that I thought it would be a great idea to bike pack the whole beautiful country of Rwanda on my own. I was grateful to meet some incredible people along the way.
Here’s a reel to tease the full video I’m hoping to release at the end of February.
