For Bandcamp Friday, we’re releasing a new song, “Light Governance” from New World Vultures, the companion LP to The New World—which we’ll release exclusively on Bandcamp next year.)

NWV has its own identity; it’s bit looser and lighter, though since it’s us, it also shimmers with contradictions. Many of its songs were recorded very late at night, and seemed to blow in on the wind. Like this one.

We usually sell the records but @jonathanmeiburg of @shearwaterband had a few tricks up his sleeve himself last weekend.

The American musician visited us at Rough Trade West for a rare acoustic performance last Saturday, celebrating the release of the band’s latest offering ‘The New World’, an immersive record drawing on field recordings from Antarctic expeditions and Meiberg’s travels.

Whatever you do, don’t pick up their album at Rough Trade. Definitely don’t listen to it, fall in love with it, and tell all your friends about it either. by @jonathanmeiburg

I would like to humbly point out that this week is the first time white-throated caracaras—a handsome and secretive species first described to science by a young Charles Darwin—have ever appeared in international media. I’d like them to be known for less dismal reasons, but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

A loving description of the dump where hantavirus *may* have found its first cruise passenger also appears in A Most Remarkable Creature (nudge nudge.) It’s one of few places on earth where you can reliably see three caracara species together, doing one of the clever things they do best—picking through stuff we’ve left behind to find new sources of food.

The only other place I’ve ever seen white-throats is high in the Baguales range in Chile, where they seem to be living on insects and the remains of guanacos killed by pumas. This photo, by Martjan Lammertink, shows one with a friend in Argentina. by @jonathanmeiburg
