I am deeply grateful to share that I received the University Club of Washington DC’s Distinguished Washingtonian Award for 2026. It is humbling to join a roster of honorees that includes such luminaries as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, José Andrés, Molly Smith, and Leonard Slatkin, among others. My sincere thanks to the Club’s Board of Governors and its President, Cindy Ziegler, and to the entire membership for welcoming me into such a warm and hospitable community. @universityofdc @phillipscollection by @jonathanpbinstock

Art always builds bridges, fosters encounters and opens up new horizons. On wednesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming in Can Prunera, Beatriz Bolton and Jonathan P. Binstock, Director and CEO of the Phillips Collection in Washington D. C. one of the most prestigious museums in the United States.

Their collection includes works by Cézanne, Braque, Paul Klee, Goya and Delacroix, amongst many others. Their vast knowledge, profound humanity and enduring warmth will remain with us forever. Sóller and Washington are now united by art. As Joan Miró wrote: art never ends; art is like the wind: something that is always on the move, without rest.

I had an incredible time at the 104th @santafeindianmarket, meeting artists and discovering their dedication to their craft as they strengthen legacy and extend their cultures, all the while demonstrating profound relevance for the world we live in. A truly nourishing experience. Here I am inside Charles Ross' Dwan Light Sanctuary, which has nothing to do with Indian Market, but I hope it got your attention.

Renferd Koruh, Hopi, and his first-prize winning frog Katsina in the Pueblo Wood Carving "boundary/innovation" category. Congratulations @renferdkoruh‼️

With @dwhitehawk at the @cararomerophotography gallery, delighting in her stunning sculpture with glass fabricated in Murano, Italy.

With my friend from Rochester days, the artist and Seneca leader Peter Jemison. It's a true honor to know Peter and to have had the opportunity to work with him @magrochester on his impressive and wonderful survey exhibition.

Akio and @terranlastgun with the work Akio picked out for @phillipscollection. Too bad it's all wrapped up! It's so beautiful and we're truly grateful for the generous consideration.

With Jonathan Binstock, Director of the historic Washington DC Phillips Collection, America’s first modern art museum “wandering” through the new Geffen Galleries at LACMA. (In front of Liz Glynn’s “Futility of Conquest” part of the MAC3 collection.) Jonathan was “astounded” and “blown away” about how bold and adventuresome this new way of curating art is. He told me he had read all the press about the new building and approach and still wasn’t prepared for how “radical” it is. His expectations were wildly exceeded!! For me, strolling through for two hours with such an experienced museum director was an incredible joy. A few random morsels here:
1) Rene Magritte Dangerous Liasons 1935
2)John McCracken Don’t Tell Me When To Stop (what a great title) 1967
3) Roni Horn
4)Miyashita Zenji Path of Light 2010
5) Carmen Herrera Blanco y Verde 1971
6) Thomas Joshua Cooper Moonlight 2004 (What a photograph!!)
7) LA’s Lauren Halsey (go see her “sister dreamer” sculpture park !
8) 3rd century Roman fresco. This continues to be one of my favorite works at LACMA. I can’t take my eyes off it.
9) and finally a 4th of July treat Paul Cadmus Coney Island 1934. Zoom in for a feast of craziness.
The new LACMA keeps giving and giving and giving. I see things I would never have looked at absent this presentation. What a gift to LA. @jonathanpbinstock @lacma @summaeverythang @lzglynn by @jonathanpbinstock

Have you been to Nice? In a heat wave? I'd do (nearly) anything for the kinds of spectacular art experiences I'm having here.

Bernar Venet's intervention into the only James Turrell Skyspace in France: he painted Provençal blue what would otherwise be a typical white Turrell perimeter bench🤭

My favorite moment in the outstanding Helen Frankenthaler exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel is this juxtaposition with our Courbet at the Phillips. Both paintings are titled the Mediterranean. @kunstmuseumbasel @helenfrankenthalerfoundation @phillipscollection by @jonathanpbinstock

This is the Senior Leadership Team of The Phillips Collection, and there is none better.

We began our SLT retreat with a visit to the National Museum of the American Indian, where assistant curator Rebecca Trautmann led us on an excellent tour of her exhibition on Truman Lowe—a celebrated artist, teacher, and curator whose contributions to Native American art and culture have been deeply influential. We also saw "Stretching the Canvas," a sweeping survey of Native American painting over the past century. Both exhibitions were exceptional, and the museum itself has never looked better. Thank you, Rebecca, for such a generous and illuminating afternoon.

Lunch at @minettataverndc was, as to be expected, a total delight. Thank you @keithmcnallynyc for the opportunity to raise a glass of champagne with this superlative team.

Each of these individuals brings remarkable talent, dedication, and care to their work every day. The Phillips is what it is because of them.

I didn’t see this juxtaposition of Fra Angelico’s frescoes at San Marco with small Rothko panels. I wish I had. Two artists separated by five centuries who understood color and space as vehicles for the ineffable — light, transcendence, devotion rendered visible, material. San Marco is one of my favorite museums in the world, and this is exactly the kind of encounter it invites. Thank you @boltonbeatriz for sharing.

Fabulous quick trip to The Barnes Foundation to see "Henri Rousseau" on the last days of the exhibition, including two gems loaned from The Phillips Collection.

I was inculcated with a passion for Rousseau from an early age by Lawrence Steefel, a wildly enthusiastic modern art history professor at Washington University who captured me for the discipline. I've been delighted by the charm of Rousseau ever since...strange, wonderful, lighthearted, and always so earnest. There is nothing cynical or ironic about these whimsical, magical works.

And a few favorite snapshots of the Barnes permanent collection.… What struck me on this visit was the persistent tension between the art and the doctrinaire installation framework that insists on making demands of both viewer and object, prescribing how the work should be seen and how the experience should go. Art always outpaces theories of interpretation and prescriptions of meaning. At the Barnes, you can see and feel the works pressing against the constraints, struggling to be seen on their own terms. The art wins every time.
