Measure twice, hang once… or measure five times and still side-eye it.

The gallery floor has been a full-on choreography of ladders, tape measures, and intuitive decisions as we’ve been building “The Forest was Rebuilt with Scrap and Ply” at @wiregrassmuseum—curated by Katie Hargrave and Meredith Lynn. @katie_hargrave_ @meredithlauralynn

Come see where everything finally landed.

Opening tonight, 5:30–8 🌿

We’ve got work in the show from ‘under the highlands’ (with @jonathantraviesa), alongside a stellar lineup of artists. taken in Wiregrass Museum of Art by @jonathantraviesa

How do you make a show look effortless… like “nbd, I just woke up like this”?

It’s all in the details.

If you know me, you know I like to keep things tidy and when your artwork is a lil dusty, the @wiregrassmuseum ‘s got you! ✨

When Paula pulled out the conservator’s vacuum as evidenced by this vid it brought me such nerdy satisfaction.

If you’re a detail freak like me enjoy this behind-the-scenes peek before it all comes together this week!

Join us for “The Forest was Rebuilt With Scrap and Ply” curated by @katie_hargrave_ and @meredithlauralynn

What can we learn from our non-human counterparts about weathering storms, heat, and rising waters?

In "Under the Highlands", we looked to Clitoria fragrans, Nolina Brittoniana, and Asimina obovata—plant elders that have endured centuries of arid conditions in Peninsular Florida and continue to flourish.

Part of this project imagines a future where Florida is nearly underwater, except for the Highlands,
a scorched island where ancient species persist and traces of the past remain inscribed in limestone.

To create these images, we sourced botanical archives from the Florida Arboretum and produced large-scale negatives. A family garage in Central Florida became a makeshift darkroom, where plant forms merged with sea-faring words—adrift, pelagic—as photograms that we later buried in sand (with a lil help from our familia!)

In later iterations, our friend and brilliant artist @jackniven_arts translated these fragile forms into more stable, sculptural frames (thank you, Jack).

✨ One week until the opening of "The Forest Was Rebuilt With Scrap and Ply" where these works will be on view.

If you’re nearby, come see them in person:

Hold the line--The most FAQ I get as an artist is “how long did this project take you?”

Artists when do you set the creative clock?

At the glint of a new idea?
The emergence of the little doodle in your diary?
First convo, first photo, first fire?

Under the Highlands evolved from many roadtrips from New Orleans to Central and South Florida.

Along the way @jonathantraviesa and I would relish in roadside attractions to make photos of wondrous limestone formations, drawn by their ability to map layers of deep geologic time.

These works were created throughout a two-year expedition: from the Florida Caverns in Marianna to Blowing Rocks Preserve, to Windley Key Fossil Reef.

It’s been five years! We first exhibited our craggy creations @tempusprojects in Tampa, then @yeswecannibal in Baton Rouge, and now @wiregrassmuseum in Dothan, just a few miles away from the Florida Caverns where it all began.

If you’re in the area, check out this work in person during the Wiregrass Art After Hours event for the opening of “The Forest Was Rebuilt With Scrap and Ply” curated by @katie_hargrave_ and @meredithlauralynn

Taking a break from Rivers and water bodies to dig out these rocks, uncover perennial plants, and shade you with air-conditioned suns.

What do limestone formations, botanical specimens, and A/C units have in common?

They are all part of @jonathantraviesa and my project “Under the Highlands” and soon to be part of the exhibition “The Forest Was Rebuilt With Scrap and Ply” opening April 17th @wiregrassmuseum

Watch this space to learn more about the show, artists, and themes.

Curated by @katie_hargrave_ and @meredithlauralynn

Thank you Paula Haymon for the install support, Dana-Marie Lemmer for the curatorial eye , and Latasha Hyatt for these photos

Untitled Art Fair, 2025
✨ CRISTINA KILLED IT ✨

So much to say about the vision and the hard work and the inclusive collaboration - moving thru the crazy art world - strong and graceful as always ❤️.

Particularly notable is Cristina’s deft mix of lush digital images in the 5 channel video with raw physical materials (driftwood frames and river clay ceramics!) culled from the Mississippi itself. So awesome…

Congrats to Emily and Other Plans Gallery ! Untitled is lucky to have this work.

Memory and time; the number 20 feels arbitrary when the precarity of living in New Orleans is still so true…

Over six days with two dear friends, caring for seven pets, there are too many stories to recount - in and around the American Can Company / Bayou St. John neighborhood.

For about 2 hours out of those several chaotic days, however, I was able to make a few photographs (some seen here) including a makeshift airlift site on the sidewalk along the flooded bayou.

Keep praying for New Orleans ! by @jonathantraviesa

“Immaculate Perception” has been mentioned, honorably, at the PhotoNOLA Bookfair, 2024. @photonola.festival
Thanks to the organizers @cosmopsis and @lisacates as well as the book reviewers, @michelle.d.marsh and @eliotdudik

I can’t thank enough, the Baltic legend Alexey Murashko, whose design solutions and technical care were fundamental to this book turning out as beautiful as it is. Check him out: https://desight.com/

Last (first image), like many creative projects, this book is a labor of love. So happy it exists - not least because I got to build a 90 second paper grotto as a commercial backdrop during the fair!

Thanks to all who’ve purchased the book; everyone of you is key in keeping the creative work afloat.💋🤘💋.
Stay tuned for more acquisition opportunities coming in the new year…

United States debut of “Immaculate Perception” is happening tomorrow Sat Dec 14th at the photoNOLA Bookfair. @photonola.festival

Pass by the Ogden Museum Patrick Taylor Library from 11-5 and pick up a copy ! There will be many other awesome photo books to peruse, as well.

I am very excited about how this project turned out - in fabulous form.
About the book:
“Immaculate Perception” is a photography book that hints at the divine mother by fetishizing rock grottos. In this conceptual volume, light is the magical property in both the photographic medium as well as religious faith.
44 pages, Japanese-bound;
Includes foil-stamped cover with gatefold and tipped-in “divine” paper
Design by Alexey Murashko; Printed at Jelgeva Tipografija in Latvia, May 2024. by @jonathantraviesa

Can’t believe our time in Latvia is nearly up! There is so much to share forthcoming (I’m not so speedy on doing life and then outlining it on the platform).

But one of the special projects I’ve been working on here is a new book largely about the magic of photography and — divine apparition. It is called “Immaculate Perception”. The project started and then stalled a few years ago in New Orleans. Somehow the gift of time and the rich creative environment in Riga created the right scenario for me to pick it back up and cross the finish line.

It only makes sense then to launch the publication here in Riga - literally on the eve of our flight home.
Come out to ISSP at 19:00, 1 JULY, this Monday.
I will give a brief talk on my career and the path that led me to this publication - followed by a book signing! You can also say goodbye (for now, only!) to me and Cristina.

The book is 44 pages, Japanese bound, with a gatefold and a tipped in “divine cloth”. Offset printed by Jelgava Tipogrāfija.
The design is by the Baltic legend, Alexey Murashko, to whom I am especially grateful — and will always be thrilled to have worked with… www.desight.com. (I had a strong sense of what I wanted out of this book with all the material already created. But there were several problems with how to integrate the project into book form. Alexey’s design contributions / solutions are fabulous and his technical oversight and care are unmatched. )

Deep thanks to the family @issp_latvia especially @julija.berkovica and @liga.ir

None of this would have been possible without the best partner and her brilliance in providing the opportunity (#fullbright scholar) to even be here @cm0lina

and to @maijarudovska for all the guidance and support during our time!
