Feeling blessed beyond belief today. I want to take this moment not to be given my flowers, but to tell my story and thank those who got me here. I want to tell as many people as possible before I’m gone that things do get better, because at one point I woke up every day and didn’t think they ever would.

That’s not to say it’s easy, some days it’s the most difficult thing in the world to stay sober. But consistent work and perserverance is repaid handsomely. Staying the course and putting positivity into the world is rewarded. Wake up and count your steps and stay winning. Keep going. It’s all worth it. taken in Westland, Michigan by @jonathondowning

As a painter, Jonathon Downing balances fantastical elements with grounded emotion through carefully constructed realism. By introducing greater depth, contrast, and detailed settings, his portraits appear familiar at first glance, revealing distortions and psychological intricacies through closer observation.

This tension invites viewers to imagine each character’s inner life and backstory.

“I start each painting with a digital rendering, combining photos from the library I have accumulated since I started exploring this aesthetic in 2018.

Then, it’s just about mixing the color and putting it where it goes. The painting process is very meditative to me. All I have to do is make it look like the reference, and that’s the most fun, relaxing part.”

STUDIO VISIT: JONATHON DOWNING

Jonathon Downing (b. 1997) is an oil painter whose portraits craft conversations about public image and internal truth through the lens of those who idolize athletes, celebrities, and cultural tastemakers.

He created his unique aesthetic while studying at the University of Michigan (2020), and continues to refine the process of digital photo montage and realistic painting.

Although raised and residing in Metro Detroit, the subjects he paints exist in an alternate reality where human beings are monstrous amalgamations of portraiture. Surprisingly organic and honest, these portraits simultaneously depict idolized figures and those who project meaning onto them, promoting deeper observation in order to fully form a hypothesis on each character’s backstory and present emotions.
