Made famous by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner (@kyliejenner), Snapchat (@snapchat) unveiled their iconic Coachella flower crown filter on April 15th, 2016, six months before the mannequin challenge took the Internet by storm on October 12th, 2016.

Downing’s glossy oil painting and glitches highlight the widely-adopted artificial filters that now appear regularly online, influencing contemporary beauty standards and proliferation of trending viral challenges.

MEET JONATHON DOWNING

Jonathon Downing (b. 1997) is an oil painter whose portraits craft conversations about public image and internal truth through the lens of those who idolize athletes, celebrities, and cultural tastemakers.

He created his unique aesthetic while studying at the University of Michigan (2020), and continues to refine the process of digital photo montage and realistic painting.

Although raised and residing in Metro Detroit, the subjects he paints exist in an alternate reality where human beings are monstrous amalgamations of portraiture. Surprisingly organic and honest, these portraits simultaneously depict idolized figures and those who project meaning onto them, promoting deeper observation in order to fully form a hypothesis on each character’s backstory and present emotions.

OPENING RECEPTION: “2016: Synthetic Nostalgia,” is Jonathon Downing’s solo exhibition, examining the year remembered through personal memory and its defining imagery, opening on Saturday, October 17 from 6-9PM.

A decade later, these cultural moments are distorted in the contemporary social media nostalgia movement. Drawing from 2016 pop culture iconography across the Internet, his exhibition brings together overlapping moments that now only exist in a blurry digital archive.

Inspired by the viral “2026 is the new 2016” nostalgia that has taken over social platforms as younger generations look back at mid-2010s culture, the movement started as a viral response to digital fatigue and AI-generated content, proposing a “reset” to the simpler internet of a decade ago.

“2016: Synthetic Nostalgia” considers the year as it exists today- fragmented, romanticized, distorted, and endlessly reproduced, ultimately asking what remains of a moment once the original experience begins to fade. His paintings are layered, with chaotic visual elements and individual significance that compete for the viewer’s attention, reflecting the Internet.

Does the nostalgia that we feel belong to the past itself, or within the version of it we have collectively created online?

That victory was not just the first and only 3-1 comeback in NBA Finals history, but more importantly, fulfilled Lebron James’ promise to bring a championship to his basketball home of Cleveland.]

Back from Detroit with two new additions. Commissioned this during World Cup group stages. Both balls in frame: the 2022 Final ball, from when Messi won it, and the 2026 ball @jonathondowning. Also picked up this one. The mood and palette feel like a memory I can’t quite place @deezy_.

Karl Anthony Towns @royaltyclothingclub tee. KAT had one of the most impressive and impactful transformations of any player on this years roster. Second half of the seasons he broke all of my/ many others perceptions of who he was a player. His evolution surpassed all my hopes and expectations and I truly believe that without him, we would bot be calling ourselves champions right now!

@rittenhouserye 10 year! Just like KAT, this bottle is one that has truly impressed me this year. Rittenhouse has always been the Rye that I use for cocktails like a Black Manhattan, but nothing I ever sip neat. Its been a low cost bottle really good for cocktails. That was until I was at an event where there was 10 or so bottles on the table, some costing upwards of $350, and one of those 10 was the 10 year rye. It was easily the best bottle on the table! Sadly it was sold out everywhere but I had an awesome friend who was willing to trade me one of his backups!

Seven months. That’s all it took to turn an idea into the space we now call home.

Designed by our heritage artist @ben_tats , the studio was built with one rule: no straight edges in the main area. Every curve you walk through was intentional, over 40 tons of sand went into the concrete floor alone. We mixed natural and indirect light throughout, giving our artists daylight conditions no matter the hour, and partnered with local audio company Fohhn to bring in sound systems built for concerts, not just a studio.
Started building in October 2024. Finished in April 2025. What came out of it is more than a place to get tattooed, it’s become a meeting point for the industry. As Mambotattooer put it walking through for the first time: “You feel there is something big happening when you walk into this studio.”
This is also where we host our exhibitions, pop-ups and nights, most recently with @jonathondowning & @main______account (JAK) hosted by @bettergosouth
