Photos by @jonbakerpeople from New Canons 2: Readings from Innovative Independent Publishers, which took place at the @icalondon on 23rd September. The event featured 8 brilliant writers reading from their books, with each reading preceded by a short interview with the writer and their publisher together, hosted by me and @smalleyellis. The aim of this event series is to celebrate writers creating exciting new work that pushes the boundaries of form, but also to celebrate the presses who are bringing such distinctive and innovative books into the world. It was both brilliant fun and spiritually illuminating again, thank you to everyone who came along. The first New Canons was intended as a one off event in March, but the level of enthusiasm that we have received for the project continues to be amazing. See you at the next one. New Canons 2 featured: Colin Bramwell reading from Fetch, published by And Other Stories Claire Carroll reading from The Unreliable Nature Writer, published by Scratch Books Cassie Friel reading from her Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize-commended story Babak Ganjei reading from On A Bus Without A Phone, published by Rough Trade Books Hannah Levene reading A Pizza Hut, A Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut, published by Cipher Press D Mortimer reading from Speed Glum Hero, published by Sticky Fingers Publishing Holly Pester reading from Cafés, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions Aea Varfis-van Warmelo reading from Attention Seeking Behaviour, published by Peninsula Press by @jonbakerpeople

📸 CONTROL Opening by @jonbakerpeople —— The exhibition brings together fifteen artists working across painting, video, sculpture, simulation and game environments to explore how the visual language of video games has entered contemporary art. Looking to avatars, NPCs, portals, glitches, rendered landscapes and the aesthetics of 80s, 90s and 00s gaming, the exhibition considers agency, artificial life, emotional distance and the illusion of control. Our long-time collaborator and friend Jon Baker visited Justin Mortimers studio last month. (b.1970, UK) Mortimer is a British artist whose paintings consistently invite us to question the relationship between subject matter and content, beauty and horror, and between figuration and abstraction. While the imagery is almost exclusively pitiless, the texturing of the paint, the play between light and shade and the passages that lead from photo-realist definition to near-abstract formlessness are so sensitively handled as to make the work at least partially redemptive as well as to indicate a key philosophical dimension: the oblique relationship between evidence and interpretation. Mortimer attended Slade School of Fine Art, 1988–92. Prizes include the Cadbury’s National Exhibition of Children’s Art (1986) and the BP Portrait Award (1991), Mortimer has been commissioned to paint many prominent figures including HM the Queen, Steven Redgrave and Harold Pinter. OHSH Projects curated and hosted Mortimer’s most recent solo exhibition in London, VEIL at The Bottle Factory, October - November 2025. taken in New Kent Road by @jonbakerpeople
