El Último Último Sueño de Frida y Diego

A final glimpse of Frida and Diego’s last dream at MoMA before the guards closed the doors.

An immense privilege to have co-curated and designed this exhibition shaping its spatial, theatrical and narrative world in a first-of-its-kind collaboration with The Metropolitan Opera.

Conceived as an immersive theatrical installation to coincide with the production of Gabriela Lena Frank and Nilo Cruz’s opera the exhibition brought the work of Kahlo and Rivera into dialogue within a shared world — somewhere between exhibition, theatre and dream.

One last look as the guards closed the doors and the lights went out. First one in, last one out. muchas muchas gracias.

I’ve seen a lot of Frida shows. This one is different, and it’s because of who built it.

@themuseumofmodernart teamed up with the @metopera (a first for both of them!) around the Met’s production of *El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego*. The opera opens three years after Frida’s death, on the Day of the Dead, with an aging Diego calling her back to the world of the living for one night.

⚡️ @jonbausor designed the sets for it. Then MoMA handed him a gallery and let him do it again, this time with the actual paintings hanging inside.

So you’re not walking through a white cube. You’re walking through his staging of their lives, with the real Kahlos and Riveras in it: the intimate self-portraits and the murals that came out of the same decade, when the two of them were rebuilding what Mexican identity looked like after the revolution. They were together from 1928 until she died in 1954.

Go for the theatre of it. Stay for the paintings.

Probenstart für die Oper im Festspielhaus: Bildgewaltige Ausflüge ins unangenehme Draußen

Mit der ersten Probe am vergangenen Montag hat die entscheidende Phase der Vorbereitungen für die neue Hausoper im Festspielhaus begonnen. Ausgerechnet auf dem vermeintlich kargen Mond öffnet sich für Matej Brouček in einer psychedelischen Landschaft ein Tor zur Selbstfindung. Es sagt ihm genauso wenig zu wie der darauffolgende Trip in ein katakombenhaftes 15. Jahrhundert. Mit der Oper DIE AUSFLÜGE DES HERRN BROUČEK beweisen die Bregenzer Festspiele einmal mehr, auf welch verwegene Reisen das (Musik-)Theater das Publikum mitnehmen kann. Für Regisseur Yuval Sharon liegt gerade darin der Reiz des Werks: „Brouček ist Magie, Brouček ist Freude!“

This past weekend’s Live in HD transmission of Gabriela Lena Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego wowed audiences around the world.

Such incredible talent, enthusiasm and skills involved in bringing the design to life on the Met stage, and it’s been a true pleasure collaborating with everyone involved.

The colors of Mexico arrive at the Met 🏵️

The countdown is on for the Met premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank and librettist Nilo Cruz’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, with a vibrant new production by @deborahcolker that takes enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s iconic paintings.

We spoke to co-costume designers @jonbausor and @wilberthgonzalez about the staging and working with artists from across Mexico to bring the production to life.

El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego is on stage May 14–June 5 and in cinemas May 30. Music Director @nezetseguin conducts.
