Birgit. Look who’s come to Dinner! On this day (Nov 1st) in 1960, US Vogue published an article on what to wear when the invitation says “don’t dress”. The photography included Irving Penn’s now iconic ‘The lady and the Cheetah’. While I’ve not attempted to slavishly reproduce it, this shot nonetheless pays homage on the 63rd anniversary of its original publication. A great shoot with @mykeytolondon and @saph.art at @shutterhousestudio on Sunday. I’ve added the Cheetah (and candle flame) in post - do you know how difficult it is to get a taxidermy cheetah in the right pose?! - but everything else is as shot. What do you think? ⁣

Lulu. The Saturday morning edit. I’ve always been a little obsessed by the work of the old masters, Carravagio, Vermeer, Rembrandt, for their use of light and shadow. I remember distinctly the first time a painting moved me to tears - a self portrait by Rembrandt hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, painted in the later part of his life - the glossy eyes, the fragility. I've since been fortunate enough to see many examples, in the Riksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre, the National Gallery and elsewhere, and have stood in Rembrandt’s studio, with the soft northern light streaming through the windows. I'm increasingly exploring incorporating this aesthetic in my photographic practice, part homage, part giving me a framework to explore light and shadow. This shot is from a series of sets at a recent shoot with Lulu - this one with natural light, but others with a relatively simple three light set up (Main, Rim/Hair, and background). Esi. Echos of Arrival. I enjoyed constructing this image and am quite pleased with the outcome. Clearly has echos of Paolo roversi - although the technique is completely different and leaning into my painterly aesthetic. I have experimented with light painting in studio shoots before, but this is a stack of images - a base image taken with flash so I can pull back some sharpness in the face, and then a series of natural light, 1 second exposures, stacked on top and hand blended - definitely no AI! Esi. This was a test shoot for me. New camera, new backdrops, but generally a relaxed no pressure shoot. Esi self styled around a loose Moodboard I provided, and my general shot style. This dress however she described as her ‘wildcard’, unsure whether it would fit in with our general vibe. But who doesn’t love a bold botanical print - especially when I had my new green @handpaintedbackdropsuk on their first outing!
