It’s rare that we get to witness a creative in the cocoon. So often, we see the caterpillar or the butterfly, but never the in-between season. The internet is filled with twenty-somethings with complete, figured-out practices and 30 under 30 lists. But there are also humans like me— 40 year olds who enjoyed their 20’s, did the corporate thing in their 30’s, and are walking away from the robotic structure of life and embracing what’s been there all along.

In between emails, alarm clocks, work, traffic, laundry, homework, and bedtime stories is this work: prioritizing a joyful art practice and slow cooking a creative career that will one day be the way I show up all hours of the day.

Sketching this @leletny editorial was a personal project that challenged me on two fronts: 1. Capturing hair texture and 2. Illustrating jewelry.

Lelet creates ethereal hair accessories that go beyond just being a barrette or a bauble. It’s hair jewelry and in drawing this, I wanted to lock in on the gems, the makeup, and because I’m me, I made it pink.

One thing’s for certain and two thing’s for sure: I love sketching Gucci.

Say what you want about Gucci’s style and creative direction, but I never have to dig too deep to find a @gucci look that’s challenging and fun to sketch. This one was inspired by the A/W 2018 collection.

Drawn at my kitchen table next to matching hydrangeas because why not and a cup of black coffee because I ran out of creamer…🚫🥛in my ☕️=😑

Hi, I’m Jonell. I’m a fashion illustrator who uses both traditional and digital tools to draw, although my iPad has been the my ride or die as of late. Speaking of late, I’m a 41 year old boy mom, who’s in a season of pivoting and betting on herself. All of this means I’m putting all the chips on the table toward building a creative career with the not-so-delusional belief that one day, I’ll be able to leave my “normal” job and make my entire living through the work of my hands.

The before picture.

Acrylic gouache swatched straight onto the paper before starting the next layer. Week old roses keep me company as I decide between the magenta and the vermillion.
As an artist, I usually show the finished piece. Oddly enough, I take more pictures of the process because the in-between is just as beautiful as the finished product. What part of the creative process do you like seeing?
