There’s a story behind every dish at Mary’s Table. ❤️🍲

Next Sunday, join us for an intimate evening of food, storytelling, memory, laughter, and community as Mary shares the meals that helped shape her life — and, in many ways, helped shape The Little Bookshop.

Each guest will enjoy a curated tasting menu of dishes Mary has cooked throughout the years while hearing the personal stories behind them. From the now-famous Butter Bean Stew inspired by a mommy-daughter lunch date with Ashley, to the tomato basil soup and grilled cheese combo that unexpectedly became a shop staple while Mary and Hans were trying to figure out what THEY should eat for lunch, every course carries history, humor, family, and love.

You’ll travel through summers in Marion, North Carolina, stories of grandparents, porches, foraging with Uncle Edgar, holiday traditions, and the meals that stay with us long after the plates are cleared. Alongside the dinner, we’ll share family photos and videos — including images of Mary’s great-grandmother — bringing each story even more to life.

The evening will build toward a full dinner featuring a meat entrée and two of Mary’s favorite holiday sides. And yes… there will absolutely be a Southern sweet delight. 🍰✨

This is not just dinner.
It’s oral history.
It’s storytelling around the table.
It’s family recipes, community memory, and the kind of evening that feels like home.

We can’t believe it’s almost been a year since The Little Bookshop opened!! The time has flown by!

This year would not have been possible without every person who has come in and grabbed a book or soup or a matcha or glass of rosé. It wouldn’t be possible without all the encouragement and support which has kept us going on the tough days.
Because being a small business is not easy!! We love each and every one of you and can’t wait to celebrate THIS COMMUNITY MILESTONE. Because WE DID THAT!

We’re in awe of the love and support from the community, and although we can’t always say yes to videos, events, or other creative ventures, it’s amazing to see the next generation exploring and building their dreams.

Our story has three different pathways and sets of dreams that came together to build The Little Bookshop, and you see them in every book, dish, drink, and event we host.

Black Sound Studies: A Remixed Music Appreciation Event 🎧📘

We’re turning the shop into a music appreciation class exploring Black sound across decades and across the diaspora. But with a twist and a vibe.

Spirituals → Blues → Soul → Hip-Hop → House → Afrobeat and more.

There will be listening.

There will be vibes.

Ok. I just had to post this. I was so surprised and so happy to open the packed @hans__palacios, who hid out in his and @noelashley bedroom, after they worked a long day @thelittlebookshopbk to wrap this gift. Then when I went to the bathroom 😬 he set it on the coffee table. And I hear “Ma! What’s taking you so long,” from Ashley. 🤣🤣🤣

When I came back to the couch I saw the package, with his card on top. I read the card and could have just cried and cried 😭. I opened the package and saw this very special gift from my new son-in-love, Hans. My own personal chef’s knife set 😭😭😭. And that one in the middle 🤤😍🥹

So I guess it’s official. I am the Chef de Potager at The Little BookShop. by @joneticspres

I’m only posting/sharing two posts today. And this is the second one but not second in importance.

Happy Birthday to my Thomas. 45 years ago today, around an hour later than this posting you became a reality. Janine said “Y’all have a boy.” And words cannot describe how big my heart grew when I saw you. From day one my love for you has been greater than I can bear at times. I look at you, even now, and I just want to stare. My Thomas. My Son. Thank you so much for being you, the persevering man that you are. The funny, cynical, knowledgeable man that you are. The loving man that you are. The caring man that you are. God gave me just what I wanted in a son and I didn’t even know that I wanted so much. But he wrapped up in you all that I needed in a son. You’re the best.

PS Thomas has told me he doesn’t like this picture. But alongside one of him and me sitting together at an event, this is one of my two favorites. To me it shows his strength and determination. I also love to hear Thomas play guitar and sing. I think he’s gifted and I think this picture shows the outpouring of those gifts. These days he’s into plants. And that could not bless be more. If you know me, you know I love plants and always have an abundance of them. He’s surpassed me though and much love to @elsamaija for encouraging and supporting this passion. 😳 lol.

The first craft class:

Make a refillable journal cover!!! This is a two part class. On November 16th you’ll design your cover (I’ll provide designs or you can use your imagination ). Then you’ll begin embroidering it with my instruction. You’ll take it home to finish your embroidering and return for part two of the class on November 23rd when you will assemble your refillable journal cover. No sewing is required AND all materials will be provided…INCLUDING a journal! And, bonus, you’ve learned a skill you can do over and over and over. 😊
