When the energy of a live show demands versatility, choosing the right camera system is key. For cinematographer Jonathan Marzolla (@jonmarzolla), capturing Charli xcx live at The Basement East in Nashville meant navigating a demanding mix of formats, camera positions and lighting conditions — from 100 fps and Open Gate to handheld, Towercam, and Steadicam setups, all while working with intense strobing and extreme shifts between blacks and highlights. Jonathan’s camera package combined ALEXA Mini and ALEXA Mini LF cameras with ARRI Hi-5 hand units and an ARRI ZMU-4 control module used as a handgrip, giving the team the flexibility to shoot responsively throughout the performance. He says, “ARRI carries a cohesive look across camera models, even under the volatile environment of a live show.
