When the energy of a live show demands versatility, choosing the right camera system is key.

For cinematographer Jonathan Marzolla (@jonmarzolla), capturing Charli xcx live at The Basement East in Nashville meant navigating a demanding mix of formats, camera positions and lighting conditions — from 100 fps and Open Gate to handheld, Towercam, and Steadicam setups, all while working with intense strobing and extreme shifts between blacks and highlights.

Jonathan’s camera package combined ALEXA Mini and ALEXA Mini LF cameras with ARRI Hi-5 hand units and an ARRI ZMU-4 control module used as a handgrip, giving the team the flexibility to shoot responsively throughout the performance.

He says, “ARRI carries a cohesive look across camera models, even under the volatile environment of a live show. From camera to hand unit, the ARRI ecosystem helped deliver a consistent look and reliable control throughout the show.”

My guy, @jonmarzolla brought an incredible articulation of and vision for the visual language of this project the second he jumped aboard. The camera team, our G&E saints, led by @panoramapaul (who went above and beyond throughout), and our art department brought the visuals to a level I could not have imagined. Then, the great @thehacknovelist took it completely over the top with VFX. So here’s a celebration of their expertise and artistry.

Last May I had the privilege of being cast as an extra for a commercial and shooting BTS for @adoption.is

Walking on to set I noticed that there wasn’t a photographer capturing any behind the scenes moments. I asked if there was a need and I was welcomed on as a part of the crew.

To capture these special moments was truly an honor. Visually telling the story of so many people using their skills and passion coming together to share a mission of shedding light on adoption.

Getting to play just a small part in this commercial is something special to me and will hold on to forever. While my photos weren’t featured in the commercial, I still got to be a part of bringing it to life.

Thank you to @floodgatepro_ @garymo_93611 & @janna_cabello for allowing me to be a part of this. (And thank you to @ayacreativexyz for posting about extras or else I would never have had this opportunity.) I pray this commercial touches so many lives in so many ways.
