Goodbye for now Daisy. We love you so much. The sweetest smartest funniest dog who would sit by me working, meditating (on my lap) watching movies (she loved film noir like me). She was the best friend our whole family @fabulucme @samreissrocks @jillgoldman. She will be sorely missed. by @jonreiss

From my recent Substack Post:
“Like many of you, I’ve read a fair bit of recriminations and analysis about last week’s election. However, one feeling that struck me is how the re-election of Trump reminded me of the feeling I had during the election and re-election of Ronald Reagan.  Trump’s takeover of the Republican party is, in fact, not a distortion of that party - it is a solidification of Reagan ideals.
Reagan’s election, as well as the dysfunction and complicity of the Democratic Party, was part of what radicalized me, leading me to give up a scholarship to Stanford’s graduate school of economics to live in a rat-infested loft in San Francisco shooting punk rock bands (and eventually deploying a DIY ethos to distributing the videos we made).  What inspired me was not just the music - but the effect that the music, via our videos, had on people in a myriad of ways. This opened my eyes to the power that art and media can have to change people’s lives that still drives me today.
What I loved about punk rock was not just the sense of community - of family - that it created - but that it was also fun. It was that community and fun that kept us going.   While it might not feel possible now - let’s find community and fun in confrontation - it will help sustain us in the battles ahead. It’s Punk Rock time.”

I have done many workshops for IDA throughout the years and I’m excited to be doing another this Thursday night 5pm-6:30pm PDT: Creating a Distribution Strategy in a Disrupted World.

The film industry is changing rapidly, and it’s more important than ever for independent filmmakers to understand how to navigate the new landscape. In this workshop, I’ll share practical tips and strategies for reaching your audience and achieving your distribution goals.

just finished a great live online case study webinar with about 200 attending (feomm 400 signups) with Filmmaker Magazine’s Scott Macaulay, Hundreds of Beavers Producer Kurt Ravenwood for a deep dive into how the independent film Hundreds of Beavers became a breakout success that grossed over $500K at the theatrical box office — more than tripling their production budget of $150K. It was great fun with tons of audience questions.

We are supporting the release this week of Food and Country which explores the precarious state of America's food system. I’m a super fan of director Laura Gabbert - she and renowned food critic, Ruth Reichl, reveal the challenges farmers, ranchers and chefs face in producing sustainable, high-quality food.

One of these challenges is monopolistic practices by large conglomerates that control the vast majority of our food system and how farmers, ranchers and chefs are working to combat this.

Food and Country premieres in NY on Wednesday, Oct 2nd, at the IFC Center. Come and meet Laura and Ruth, (and I’ll be there!)

In today’s post, I reflect on how I was inspired by the Camden International Film Festival recently and meeting two of the brilliant minds behind Minorities in Film, Brittany Franklin and Jordan St. James, who permitted me to publish their manifesto in full.

From the post: "It is time for our brilliant, creative and resourceful community to mobilize and chart the future for independent film, to advance opportunities for filmmakers and foster a way for audiences to engage in a wide diversity of perspectives".

It will only be through communal action as a field that we can succeed against the vast resources of the corporations who have so quickly absorbed and flattened our culture.”

Launched my Substack! Check the link in bio. In this post, I call out to all filmmakers who are doing distribution outside of all-rights deals to stop using the terms "self-distribution," "DIY Distribution" and even "Direct Distribution".

Let's reclaim the term "distribution" and recognize that all forms of film release are simply distribution.

It's a multifaceted process that can involve a range of strategies and tactics. I generally prefer the term “hybrid distribution”.
